Part 2: Shadows of the Past

Grace Miller had worked at wealthy parties long enough to know that rich people could be cruel without raising their voices.

They did it with glances.

With sighs.

With the way they handed you an empty glass without looking at your face.

With the way they said “excuse me” when they really meant “move.”

But Chloe Lancaster was different.

Chloe did not hide her cruelty.

She wore it like another diamond.

At twenty-two, Chloe was the golden daughter of the Lancaster family — beautiful, spoiled, famous on social media, and protected by a fortune old enough to make people forgive things they should have condemned.

Her birthday party was the event of the season.

A private ballroom.

White roses.

A seven-tier cake.

A live orchestra.

Reporters outside the gates.

Guests in designer gowns.

A massive portrait of Chloe projected behind the stage with the words:

Happy Birthday, Princess Lancaster.

Grace had stared at that screen from the service corridor and almost turned around.

Not because she hated Chloe.

Because she loved her.

Or at least, she loved the idea of her.

The little sister she had lost.

The baby who used to grab her finger.

The child Grace remembered from another life before everything became lies, silence, and survival.

Grace was six when she disappeared from the Lancaster estate.

That was what the world believed.

A tragic disappearance.

A winter lake.

A missing child.

A grieving family.

But Grace remembered enough to know the truth was uglier.

She remembered a woman’s perfume.

Sharp.

Expensive.

She remembered being told her mother wanted her to go away.

She remembered crying in the back seat of a black car while her baby sister’s birthday balloon floated against the window.

She remembered a man saying, “If she comes back, the inheritance changes.”

Then she remembered nothing for a long time.
