Part 5: The Golden Spark

At 8:40 p.m., Chloe crossed the ballroom toward the stage.
Grace stepped back to avoid her.
A guest bumped Grace’s elbow.
The tray shifted.
One champagne flute tipped, spilling a thin line of gold liquid onto Chloe’s satin dress.
The whole room seemed to gasp.
Chloe turned.
Her face changed instantly.
Rage.
Humiliation.
Power finding a target.
Before Grace could speak, Chloe slapped her.
Hard.
The red mark bloomed across Grace’s cheek.
Gasps rippled through the guests.
Vivian’s eyes flashed, but not with anger at Chloe.
With warning toward Grace.
Leave.
Disappear again.
Grace held her cheek.
She could have apologized.
She could have run.
She could have waited for another chance.
But something inside her broke open.
Sixteen years of hunger.
Sixteen years of being erased.
Sixteen years of watching her sister live inside a lie.
Grace reached into her apron and pulled out the small wrapped box.
Her voice trembled.
“Happy birthday, sister.”
Chloe’s anger vanished.
For the first time all night, she looked like a frightened child.
“My sister...”
The words escaped her before Vivian could stop them.
Because Chloe had heard stories too.
Not many.
Not full truth.
Just enough.
A sister named Grace who “died.”
A sister whose portrait had been removed.
A sister Vivian claimed was unstable, sickly, and better forgotten.
Grace opened the box.
Inside was the gold butterfly wing.
Chloe’s hand flew to her own necklace.
May you like
The other wing.
The room erupted in whispers.
