Chapter 5 - The Counterattack

By 7:00 AM the following morning, the news of the scandal at the Whitfield estate had exploded across every major media outlet in New York and New England.
The headlines were vicious: “WHITFIELD ENGAGEMENT SHATTERED: BILLIONAIRE EJECTS FIANCÉE OVER MAID’S CHILD” “WAR IN GREENWICH: HALE FAMILY FACES FINANCIAL RUIN AFTER BALLROOM BRAWL”
Vanessa Hale and her father, Richard Hale, were not going down without a dirty fight.
At 10:00 AM, Richard Hale held a televised press conference outside his Stamford office building. Standing beside his daughter—who wore a modest black dress and heavy eye makeup to make her look like an innocent, devastated victim—Richard delivered a venomous speech to twenty news crews.
"Nathan Whitfield has suffered a severe mental breakdown," Richard declared to the cameras, his voice shaking with feigned righteous anger. "He has succumbed to the manipulative machinations of a household employee who has systematically isolated him from his family, his friends, and his rightful fiancée. My daughter was verbally abused and physically removed from the estate simply because she attempted to maintain professional boundaries with domestic staff!"
In the grand study of the Whitfield mansion, Nathan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, sipping black coffee. On the screen mounted on the wall, Richard Hale’s press conference was playing on mute.
Sitting across from Nathan were Evelyn Vance, his chief legal counsel, and Frank Callahan, a veteran crisis manager who had handled high-stakes corporate warfare for thirty years.
Claire stood near the doorway, holding a tray with fresh tea. She looked pale, her phone buzzing constantly with calls from local reporters who had somehow tracked down her cell phone number.
"They're pushing the 'unstable widower' narrative," Frank said, reviewing a stack of media reports on his tablet. "They're trying to force a corporate review by your board of directors. If the board thinks you're mentally unfit or acting irrationally due to unresolved grief, they can initiate a temporary suspension of your voting rights in Whitfield Shipping."
Evelyn Vance smiled coldly, taking a file from her leather bag. "Except Richard Hale forgot one small detail."
Nathan looked at Evelyn. "The audit?"
"The complete audit," Evelyn confirmed, sliding the file across the desk. "When Vanessa was using her status as Nathan's fiancée over the last three months, she insisted on managing the estate’s charitable contributions fund. We ran a full forensic check on those accounts at 2:00 AM this morning."
Claire stepped closer, setting the tea tray down quietly. "What did she do?"
Evelyn looked at Claire with absolute professionalism. "Miss Hale embezzled approximately $1.8 million from the Whitfield Foundation for Children’s Healthcare. She transferred the funds directly into her father's private offshore accounts in the Bahamas to cover his failed real estate margin calls."
Nathan’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure steel. "She stole money meant for pediatric hospital equipment to pay for her father's bad bets?"
"Precisely," Evelyn said. "It’s not just a civil matter, Nathan. It’s grand larceny, wire fraud, and federal tax evasion."
Nathan turned to Frank. "Book a press conference for 2:00 PM at the Manhattan headquarters. Invite every major news network, every financial paper, and every legal correspondent on the East Coast."
"What do you want the headline to be?" Frank asked, a grim smile spreading across his face.
May you like
Nathan looked at Claire, then looked at the little yellow star sticker that was still taped to the corner of his monitor.
"The headline," Nathan said softly, "is that the Hale family is going to prison."
