Chapter 8 - The True Home

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brightly over the private rose garden behind the Whitfield estate. White linen canopies were set up across the manicured lawn, and the sweet scent of blooming jasmine filled the warm afternoon air.

It was not a grand, three-hundred-person corporate gala. There were no news cameras outside the gates. There were no politicians, no fake socialites, and no champagne towers built for vanity.

There were only forty people: the estate staff, Claire’s close friends, Frank Callahan, Evelyn Vance, and a few true friends who had stood by Nathan through his darkest years.

Under a canopy decorated with white roses and yellow ribbons, Nathan stood waiting in a dark blue tuxedo. His posture was proud, his eyes fixed on the stone path leading from the conservatory.

The string quartet played a soft, joyful melody.

First came Lily. She was four years old now, wearing a beautiful yellow dress, carrying a small basket filled with flower petals. She took two steps, threw a handful of petals onto the grass, stopped to look at a butterfly, then skipped ahead, laughing happily as the crowd smiled.

Then came Claire.

She took everyone's breath away. She wore an ivory lace gown that flowed gently around her, her dark hair pinned up with fresh white orchids. She carried a bouquet of wild yellow roses and white lilies. She looked radiant, strong, and deeply, beautifully happy.

As she reached the end of the path, Nathan stepped forward and took her hand.

"You look breathtaking," Nathan whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Claire smiled up at him, her hand tightening in his. "You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Nate."

Nathan laughed softly, a sound that made the staff in the front row wipe tears from their eyes.

The justice of the peace stepped forward, reading the simple, beautiful vows of love, respect, and partnership.

When it came time for the rings, Nathan didn't reach into his pocket. He turned to Lily, who was standing beside Claire, holding a small velvet box with both hands.

"May I have the rings, flower girl?" Nathan asked gently, kneeling on one knee on the grass so he was at eye level with her.

Lily opened the box proudly. "Here, Mr. Nate!"

Nathan took the thin, sparkling diamond band and slid it onto Claire’s finger. Then he took a second, smaller silver ring attached to a delicate silk ribbon and placed it gently around Lily’s neck like a necklace.

"This one is for you, Lily," Nathan whispered to the little girl. "To promise that I will always protect you, always listen to your dinosaur stories, and always fix Barnaby whenever he gets hurt."

Lily wrapped her tiny arms around Nathan’s neck, hugging him tightly. "I love you, Daddy Nate."

Nathan froze for a fraction of a second, a tear slipping down his cheek, before he held her tight against his chest. "I love you too, my sweet girl."

He stood up, pulled Claire into his arms, and kissed his wife under the warm summer sun as the crowd erupted into joyful applause.
