Chapter 4: The Price of Greed

The mansion felt hollow as Julian spent the next two weeks living in a hospital room, praying by his mother’s bedside. Eleanor’s body was fighting a severe pneumonia contract from her time in the damp basement.

Meanwhile, Evelyn's world completely crumbled. The public backlash was fierce. Brands canceled her sponsorships, her high-society "friends" blocked her number, and her family disowned her to save their own reputation. Desperate and facing total bankruptcy, Evelyn attempted one final, dangerous gamble.

She sneaked into the hospital disguised as a nurse, slipped into Eleanor's private room while Julian was downstairs getting coffee.

Eleanor opened her eyes to see Evelyn standing over her, her face twisted in desperation. "You ruined my life!" Evelyn whispered frantically, grabbing Eleanor's medical chart. "Sign this affidavit saying the videos were deepfakes, or I will disconnect this machine right now! I have nothing left to lose!"

Eleanor, despite her weakness, looked at Evelyn not with fear, but with profound pity. "You had everything, Evelyn. A husband who loved you, a family that welcomed you. But you chose cruelty."

"Sign it!" Evelyn screamed, reaching for the life support wires.

"Step away from my mother."

Evelyn froze. Julian stood at the doorway, flanked by two police officers and the hospital chief of security. He had seen her on the hospital's hallway cameras.

Evelyn burst into panicked tears, dropping the wires. "Julian, please! I was desperate! I love you, I just lost my mind!"

The police officers didn't hesitate. They slammed Evelyn against the wall, clicking the handcuffs into place. As she was dragged down the hallway, screaming and crying, Julian didn't even look back. She was no longer a factor in their lives. She was facing charges of elder abuse, extortion, and attempted murder. Her final destination wasn't a penthouse; it was a prison cell.
