THE DRAGON PIN / Chapter 2 / 6

PART 3 — THE AUCTION OF TRUTH

No one answered.

The young master's question continued to echo through the enormous marble lobby.

"Who laughed first... and who laughed because everyone else did?"

The silence became unbearable.

Only moments earlier, the room had been filled with confidence.

Now every wealthy collector, investor, and aristocrat stood frozen, afraid to even meet the young man's eyes.

Some quietly lowered their champagne glasses.

Others stared at the polished marble floor, wishing they could disappear.

Marcus Devereux felt sweat drip down his neck.

He had spent years believing fear belonged only to poor people.

Tonight...

he finally understood what real fear felt like.

Sebastian Laurent slowly walked beside the young man.

For the first time in decades, the legendary billionaire stood one step behind someone else.

No one missed the gesture.

It wasn't accidental.

It was respect.

The room immediately understood.

Power inside Laurent Royal Auctions had already changed hands.

Sebastian looked toward the executive board.

"Bring everyone."

Within seconds, assistants hurried through the building.

The board of directors.

Department heads.

Senior auction specialists.

Private security supervisors.

Legal advisors.

Even the chief financial officer.

Nearly forty executives gathered inside the grand lobby without knowing why they had been summoned.

When they saw Sebastian standing behind a poorly dressed young man...

their expressions filled with confusion.

Marcus wanted to explain.

But he couldn't find a single word.

Sebastian finally spoke.

"You have all served this family for many years."

Everyone nodded respectfully.

"Tonight..."

"...you will witness the first lesson given by the future owner of this company."

The words exploded through the hall.

Several executives gasped.

One elderly board member nearly dropped his tablet.

"The future owner?"

"No..."

"It can't be..."

Whispers spread across the room.

For decades, newspapers had speculated about Sebastian Laurent's successor.

Business magazines guessed famous investors.

Some believed the empire would be sold.

Others thought the government would eventually divide its assets.

No one...

had imagined a young man wearing ripped jeans.

The young master slowly looked around the room.

His calm eyes studied every face.

Then he smiled.

"I have no interest in expensive paintings."

Everyone looked confused.

"I have no interest in rare diamonds."

Silence.

"I don't even care about this building."

Several executives exchanged nervous glances.

Then why had he come?

The young man bent down.

He picked up the clear plastic bag once again.

The bottles rattled softly.

He raised the bag slightly.

"What do you think this is worth?"

One executive hesitated.

"A few euros..."

Another quietly answered,

"Nothing."

The young man nodded.

"Exactly."

He placed the bag back on the marble floor.

"But today..."

"...this worthless bag revealed the value of everyone in this room."

No one dared interrupt.

The young master slowly walked toward Marcus.

Each step echoed throughout the silent lobby.

"You saw trash."

Marcus lowered his head.

"My father..."

He turned toward Sebastian.

"...saw his son."

Sebastian closed his eyes.

Regret filled every line on his face.

The young master continued walking.

Now he stopped before the guests.

"You saw dirty shoes."

He looked at an elderly collector.

"You laughed."

The collector immediately looked down.

"I..."

"I'm ashamed."

The young man didn't answer.

Instead, he faced a woman wearing an elegant diamond necklace.

"You whispered."

Tears formed in her eyes.

"I followed everyone else."

The young master gave a faint smile.

"Exactly."

He slowly turned back toward the crowd.

"Most people don't create cruelty."

"They simply join it."

The sentence struck the room harder than any accusation.

Because everyone knew...

it was true.

One laugh.

Then another.

Then another.

Until humiliation became entertainment.

Sebastian watched proudly.

For the first time since finding his son, he understood something.

The boy standing before him hadn't simply survived poverty.

He had learned from it.

The young master suddenly looked toward the reception desk.

"Could someone bring me the guest list?"

An assistant immediately ran forward.

"Of course, sir."

The word sir sounded strange coming from someone who, minutes earlier, would never have acknowledged him.

The assistant handed over a leather-bound guest register.

The young master opened it slowly.

Hundreds of names.

Politicians.

Collectors.

Business leaders.

Royal advisors.

Some of the wealthiest families in Europe.

He closed the book.

Without reading a single page.

"I don't need their names."

Confused looks filled the room.

"I remember their faces."

The silence deepened again.

Marcus suddenly realized what that meant.

The young master hadn't forgotten anyone who laughed.

Not one.

Sebastian quietly asked,

"What would you like to do?"

Every executive waited.

Would he fire Marcus?

Would he remove the board?

Would he take revenge?

Instead...

the young master surprised everyone.

"I'd like today's auction to begin."

The executives blinked.

"Sir?"

He nodded.

"Exactly as scheduled."

Marcus looked up in disbelief.

"You're... not canceling it?"

"No."

The young master's voice remained calm.

"Business should never stop because pride has been exposed."

Several board members exchanged relieved looks.

Perhaps he wasn't interested in punishment after all.

Then the young master added,

"But before the first item is presented..."

"I'd like to introduce one new lot."

Everyone looked confused.

"There isn't another item on tonight's catalog."

The young master smiled slightly.

"There is now."

He slowly lifted the plastic bag.

The bottles clinked gently.

"I'd like to auction this."

The room froze.

Several guests thought they had misheard.

Marcus stared blankly.

"The bottles?"

"Yes."

A few awkward laughs escaped.

The young master waited.

Nobody else laughed.

Good.

He walked toward the main auction stage.

Security instinctively opened the velvet ropes.

No one dared stop him.

He placed the plastic bag carefully beneath the spotlight.

The luxurious stage looked almost surreal.

Priceless sculptures surrounded...

a bag of empty bottles.

The contrast was almost poetic.

The young master looked toward the audience.

"What is the value of this?"

No one answered.

He continued.

"To some..."

"It's garbage."

"To others..."

"It's survival."

He paused.

"But tonight..."

"It's a mirror."

The audience remained silent.

"It shows exactly who you are."

Sebastian slowly began clapping.

One clap.

Then another.

Soon...

the board members joined.

Then the collectors.

Then every guest inside the auction house.

Not because they were told to.

Because they understood.

Marcus remained motionless.

He could not bring himself to clap.

Not after what he had done.

The applause slowly faded.

The young master looked toward the chief auctioneer.

"Open the bidding."

The elderly auctioneer looked completely confused.

"For..."

"The bag."

The auctioneer hesitated.

"Opening price?"

The young master thought for a moment.

Then smiled.

"One euro."

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Five seconds.

Ten seconds.

Then—

An elderly woman in the back slowly raised her paddle.

"Ten thousand euros."

Gasps filled the hall.

Another collector immediately stood.

"Fifty thousand."

A businessman near the front called out,

"One hundred thousand."

The bidding erupted.

Not because they wanted plastic bottles.

Because no one wanted history to remember that they had refused them.

The numbers climbed higher.

Two hundred thousand.

Five hundred thousand.

One million.

Marcus watched with trembling lips.

Just minutes ago...

he had called those bottles worthless.

Now...

Europe's wealthiest collectors were competing to own them.

The young master quietly watched the madness unfold.

His expression never changed.

Sebastian leaned closer.

"Did you expect this?"

The young master nodded.

"People don't always pay for objects."

"They pay for what those objects reveal about themselves."

Sebastian smiled for the first time that evening.

"My son..."

"...you've already become a better businessman than I ever was."

The bidding continued climbing.

Two million.

Three million.

Four million euros.

The crowd had forgotten the paintings.

Forgotten the jewels.

Forgotten everything.

The entire auction house was now fighting over a clear plastic bag that had entered as garbage.

Finally...

the auctioneer raised his wooden hammer.

"Four million euros..."

He looked across the silent room.

"Going once..."

No one breathed.

"Going twice..."

Just as the hammer began to fall—

A deep voice echoed from the entrance.

"Five million."

Every head turned instantly.

The massive bronze doors had opened once again.

A tall elderly man wearing a dark navy overcoat stepped inside, followed by four discreet bodyguards.

Sebastian Laurent's face changed immediately.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The newcomer smiled calmly.

Then looked directly at the young master.

"So..."

"I finally found you."

The young master's calm expression disappeared...

May you like

for the very first time.

To be continued...
