Chapter 8 — The Woman at the Cemetery

Three days after the investigation began, Alejandro received an unexpected phone call.

It came from the caretaker of the old family cemetery.

"Mr. Santillán..."

The elderly man's voice sounded uncertain.

"I think there's someone you should meet."

Alejandro frowned.

"Who?"

"I don't know her name."

A pause.

"But she's been visiting your wife's grave every week for almost fifteen years."

Silence.

Alejandro slowly stood from his desk.

"My wife's grave?"

"Yes."

"And today... she left something."

Less than an hour later, Alejandro arrived at the cemetery.

The spring air was cool, carrying the scent of fresh rain.

Rows of white marble headstones stretched across the hillside beneath tall oak trees.

He had visited Isabella countless times.

Yet somehow...

He had never noticed anyone else coming.

The caretaker led him toward the grave.

"There."

Alejandro looked down.

A bouquet of white lilies rested against the stone.

Exactly the same flowers Isabella had loved.

Beside them sat a small wooden music box.

Old.

Hand-carved.

Wrapped carefully with a faded blue ribbon.

"There was also a note," the caretaker said quietly.

He handed Alejandro a folded piece of paper.

Only five words were written inside.

She deserved the truth.

Nothing else.

No signature.

No explanation.

Alejandro's pulse quickened.

"The woman?"

The caretaker nodded.

"I've seen her for years."

"She always comes alone."

"Never stays longer than five minutes."

"She cries."

"Leaves flowers."

"And disappears."

Alejandro looked around the cemetery.

"Do you know where she lives?"

The old man shook his head.

"No."

"But today..."

He hesitated.

"I recognized the car."

Alejandro looked up immediately.

"What do you mean?"

"It belongs to Saint Gabriel Children's Hospital."

Alejandro froze.

The same hospital where Isabella had spent her final weeks.

Back at the mansion, the investigation team immediately began searching old hospital employment records.

Within two hours, one name appeared repeatedly.

Maria Alvarez.

Former pediatric nurse.

Employed at Saint Gabriel for twenty-three years.

Retired shortly after Isabella died.

Rosa stared at the file.

"I remember her."

Alejandro looked up.

"You do?"

Rosa nodded slowly.

"She adored Isabella."

"They became very close during the treatments."

"But after the funeral..."

"I never saw her again."

That afternoon, Alejandro drove to a small cottage on the edge of town.

The address matched the personnel file.

He knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Finally...

The door opened.

An elderly woman stood before him.

Gray hair.

Gentle eyes.

Tired smile.

The moment she recognized him...

Her face turned completely pale.

"You..."

she whispered.

Alejandro nodded.

"I'm Alejandro Santillán."

Maria gripped the edge of the door.

"I always wondered if this day would come."

Inside the small living room, neither of them spoke for several moments.

Family photographs lined the shelves.

A simple life.

Quiet.

Ordinary.

Nothing suggested secrets.

Finally Alejandro asked the question that had haunted him since the cemetery.

"Did you know my wife?"

Maria closed her eyes.

"I loved her like a daughter."

Alejandro leaned forward.

"Then tell me."

"What truth did she deserve?"

Tears immediately filled Maria's eyes.

"I promised her..."

"I promised I would never tell anyone."

Alejandro's voice remained calm.

"She's gone."

Maria nodded.

"I know."

"And I've broken that promise every day just by staying silent."

She slowly stood and walked toward an old cabinet.

From the bottom drawer, she removed a thick envelope.

Yellow with age.

Still sealed.

Across the front...

Alejandro recognized Isabella's handwriting instantly.

If Alejandro ever asks... give him this.

His breathing stopped.

Maria held the envelope tightly.

"I've carried this for fifteen years."

"I never had the courage."

Alejandro reached for it carefully.

"What is it?"

Maria looked directly into his eyes.

"The last request your wife ever made."

Alejandro stared at the envelope for a long moment before carefully opening it.

Inside...

There was another letter.

But beneath the letter...

Was a photograph.

Alejandro picked it up.

The color immediately drained from his face.

It showed Isabella.

Very pregnant.

Standing in a hospital corridor.

Smiling.

But she wasn't alone.

Beside her stood a man Alejandro had never seen before.

The stranger's hand rested gently on Isabella's shoulder.

Not romantically.

Protectively.

As if they shared a secret.

Alejandro looked back at Maria.

"Who is he?"

Maria's lips trembled.

"He was the last person Isabella begged to see before she died."

Alejandro frowned.

"I've never heard his name."

"You weren't supposed to."

"Why?"

Maria hesitated.

Then whispered the words that changed everything.

"Because he knew the real reason Isabella became sick."

The room fell silent.

Alejandro slowly lowered the photograph.

Outside, thunder rolled across the darkening sky.

And somewhere, in another part of the city...

A black luxury sedan stopped outside the Santillán mansion.

A man wearing dark gloves stepped out, carrying a leather briefcase.

He looked toward the brightly lit windows where Alejandro's daughters were laughing together.

Then he quietly said into his phone:

"He knows about the nurse."

A voice answered from the other end.

"Then we're out of time."

The call ended.

And for the first time since Isabella's death...
