Chapter 9 — The Truth Isabella Never Told

Alejandro could barely breathe.

The old photograph trembled in his hands.

He looked at the unfamiliar man standing beside Isabella.

The smile on her face wasn't one of romance.

It was something else.

Trust.

Hope.

Relief.

Still...

He had never seen the man before.

Not once during Isabella's illness.

Not once during their marriage.

He slowly lifted his eyes toward Maria.

"Who is he?"

Maria remained silent for several long seconds.

Then she whispered,

"His name is Dr. Gabriel Ortega."

Alejandro frowned.

"I've never heard of him."

"You weren't supposed to."

Maria carefully folded her hands.

"Gabriel wasn't part of Isabella's treatment team."

"He wasn't her oncologist."

"He wasn't even assigned to her case."

Alejandro looked confused.

"Then why was she meeting him?"

Maria took a deep breath.

"Because he was investigating something."

"What?"

She hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

"The company that manufactured Isabella's medication."

The room became completely still.

Alejandro slowly leaned forward.

"What are you saying?"

Maria looked directly into his eyes.

"Months before Isabella died, several patients began developing unexpected complications."

"They all received medication from the same pharmaceutical supplier."

Alejandro's heartbeat accelerated.

"The hospital noticed?"

"Not officially."

"Then who?"

"Gabriel."

She reached into another folder and removed several photocopied documents.

"He believed something was terribly wrong."

Alejandro scanned the papers.

Medical reports.

Laboratory results.

Internal memos.

Every page contained handwritten notes.

One sentence had been circled repeatedly.

Possible contamination during manufacturing process.

"This..."

Alejandro whispered.

"...was never reported."

Maria nodded sadly.

"It disappeared."

"What do you mean?"

"The investigation was shut down."

"By whom?"

"No one ever admitted responsibility."

Alejandro stood abruptly.

"So my wife..."

Maria interrupted him before he could finish.

"We never proved the medication caused her death."

She swallowed.

"But Gabriel believed the company buried evidence before regulators could investigate."

Alejandro stared at the documents.

His entire world seemed to tilt.

For fifteen years...

He had believed cancer alone had taken Isabella.

Now someone was suggesting there might have been another story.

"Where is Dr. Ortega now?"

Maria's eyes lowered.

"No one knows."

Alejandro blinked.

"What?"

"He disappeared."

Silence.

"Disappeared?"

Maria nodded.

"Three weeks after Isabella died."

"No resignation."

"No forwarding address."

"No contact."

"He simply vanished."

Back at the Santillán mansion...

Alexander, the family's longtime attorney, had already begun searching public records.

Within an hour, he entered Alejandro's office carrying another file.

"I found him."

Alejandro stood immediately.

"Where?"

Alexander placed the file on the desk.

"That's the problem."

Alejandro opened it.

The last official record showed Dr. Gabriel Ortega leaving the country twelve years earlier.

Destination:

Argentina.

After that...

Nothing.

No employment records.

No property.

No tax filings.

No medical license renewals.

It was as if he had ceased to exist.

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

The black luxury sedan remained parked outside a quiet warehouse.

Inside sat the same man who had made the mysterious phone call.

His name was Victor Salazar.

He wore an expensive suit.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

The type of man who attracted no attention despite enormous influence.

A younger man entered the room.

"Sir."

Victor looked up.

"Alejandro met the nurse."

"I know."

"He also has the photograph."

Victor remained expressionless.

"And the documents?"

The younger man hesitated.

"We couldn't recover them."

Victor slowly removed his glasses.

"For fifteen years..."

he said quietly,

"...we kept this buried."

He looked toward the window.

"I will not allow one grieving husband to destroy everything."

"What are your orders?"

Victor answered without emotion.

"Find Dr. Ortega."

The younger man frowned.

"We thought he was dead."

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"So did I."

A long silence followed.

Then Victor added,

"And if he isn't..."

He never finished the sentence.

He didn't need to.

That evening...

The quadruplets were playing in the garden.

Valeria chased butterflies.

Lucia practiced riding her bicycle.

Sofia laughed as Rosa helped build a tiny birdhouse.

Only Elena noticed something unusual.

She stopped playing.

"Daddy?"

Alejandro looked up from the patio.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the front gate.

"I think someone's watching us."

Everyone turned.

Far beyond the iron fence...

A black sedan slowly pulled away from the property.

Alejandro's expression darkened.

He recognized the vehicle immediately.

It was the same one mentioned in the security report that morning.

Someone had been watching his family.

Again.

That night, Alejandro couldn't sleep.

He sat alone in Isabella's old study.

The photograph lay beside her final letter.

He studied Dr. Gabriel Ortega's face again and again.

Then something caught his attention.

He leaned closer.

There...

Barely visible in the background of the photograph...

Reflected in a hospital window...

Was another figure.

A man wearing a dark overcoat.

Watching Isabella and Gabriel from a distance.

His face was blurry.

But one detail was perfectly clear.

Pinned to his jacket was a small gold emblem.

Alejandro immediately recognized it.

It was the corporate insignia of Helix Biotech—

the same pharmaceutical company named in Dr. Ortega's investigation.

Alejandro slowly closed the file.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"This wasn't an accident..."

Outside...

Lightning flashed across the night sky.

And hundreds of miles away...

An elderly man living under another name opened an old wooden box.

Inside was a faded photograph of Isabella.

He stared at it for a long time before quietly saying,

"They've finally found you."

Then he reached for the telephone.

May you like

Because after fifteen years of hiding...

Dr. Gabriel Ortega had decided it was finally time to come home.
