Chapter 13 – The Deal No One Expected

Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Brooks entered the interrogation room carrying two files.
One was labeled:
Richard Harrington
The other:
Vanessa Kensington
He sat across from Vanessa.
"You have two choices."
She folded her arms.
"I'm listening."
"You can go to trial."
"And?"
"You'll likely spend decades in prison."
She looked away.
"Or?"
"You cooperate."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Against Richard?"
Brooks slid several photographs across the table.
One showed the shove.
Another showed offshore transfers.
A third displayed forged documents.
Then came the insurance policy.
Vanessa's breathing slowed.
"He really changed the beneficiary..."
Brooks nodded.
"To you."
She stared at the page.
For months Richard had promised they would build a family together.
Yet buried in the legal documents was something else.
Another insurance application.
Dated only weeks earlier.
If Vanessa died...
Richard would inherit everything.
She whispered,
"He planned for both of us."
Brooks didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Every promise.
Every vacation.
Every whispered declaration of love.
All of it suddenly looked different.
Not romance.
Strategy.
She looked back at Brooks.
"If I tell you everything..."
"Yes?"
"Can you protect my son?"
Brooks nodded once.
"We'll do everything the law allows."
Vanessa took a deep breath.
Then she began talking.
For six straight hours.
By the time she finished...
The government no longer had a fraud case.
May you like
They had a criminal conspiracy.
And Richard Harrington had just lost the only witness willing to lie for him.
