Chapter 12 – What the Card Revealed

Three days later we sat inside the federal field office.

This time the room wasn't filled with family court officials.

It was filled with FBI agents.

Nobody smiled.

A technician projected the contents of the recovered microSD card onto a large monitor.

Folders appeared.

Dozens of them.

Each labeled with dates.

County names.

Case numbers.

Agent Morales clicked the first folder.

It contained scanned custody files.

Nothing unusual.

Until the second page.

Rebecca leaned forward.

"They've been altered."

The originals showed allegations marked Unsubstantiated.

The scanned versions now read Immediate Removal Recommended.

Someone had digitally changed official records.

Folder after folder showed the same pattern.

Medical reports rewritten.

Psychological evaluations edited.

Interview transcripts missing pages.

Then came the spreadsheet.

Agent Morales froze.

"Oh..."

Across hundreds of rows were children's names.

Birthdates.

Case numbers.

And colored columns labeled:

Priority

Placement

Approved Guardian

One column simply read:

Financial Value

My blood ran cold.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

"What does financial value mean?"

No one answered immediately.

Finally Morales spoke.

"It appears..."

"...someone was assigning monetary amounts to custody cases."

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Jenkins whispered,

"This wasn't corruption."

"It was a business."

Then another folder opened.

Inside sat dozens of recorded conversations.

Emily had secretly recorded meetings.

One voice immediately stood out.

My mother's.

There was no mistaking it.

She laughed softly before saying,

"Once the grandparents' petition is approved, nobody checks where the funding goes."

Another voice replied,

"Just keep the social worker happy."

The room fell silent.

Agent Morales slowly removed his glasses.

"This investigation just became national."
