Chapter 11 – The Secret Inside the Rabbit

Nobody breathed while Officer Jenkins reached for the small pair of evidence scissors Rebecca kept in her desk drawer.

Charlotte clutched my sleeve.

"Don't hurt Bunny."

"I'll be careful," Jenkins promised.

He slid the tip beneath the uneven stitches.

The thread wasn't factory-made.

It was thick cotton.

Hand-sewn.

Whoever had stitched it together hadn't cared about appearances.

Only that whatever was inside stayed hidden.

One careful cut.

Then another.

A small opening appeared along the rabbit's back.

Jenkins reached inside.

His fingers stopped.

He slowly pulled out a tightly rolled plastic tube no bigger than his thumb.

Rebecca frowned.

"A waterproof capsule."

The room grew still.

Inside the tube sat a tiny microSD card.

And folded around it...

a narrow strip of notebook paper.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Emily's.

Rebecca unfolded it carefully.

"If Charlotte still has this..."

She stopped reading for a second.

Charlotte whispered,

"She wrote my name?"

Rebecca nodded.

Then continued.

"If Charlotte still has this, then they never found it.

If you're reading this, don't trust anyone connected to Carson Family Services.

The children they took weren't mistakes.

Some were chosen.

The proof is on the card.

If anything happens to me, give this directly to the FBI."

Signed simply—

Emily.

Silence filled the office.

Jenkins immediately sealed the card inside an evidence bag.

"No one touches this until Digital Forensics copies it."

Rebecca looked at me.

"Do you realize what this could be?"

I nodded slowly.

"Evidence."

May you like

She shook her head.

"Potentially the reason Emily disappeared."
