Chapter 13 – Emily Comes Home

The arrests began before sunrise.

News helicopters circled the courthouse.

Federal agents served warrants in four counties simultaneously.

By afternoon, every television station carried the same headline.

Multi-State Child Placement Fraud Investigation Expands.

Twenty-three officials were suspended.

Seven arrested.

More names followed every day.

Yet one person still remained missing.

Emily Carson.

Until Friday evening.

Rebecca's phone rang while we were eating dinner.

She listened without interrupting.

Then quietly stood.

"They found her."

Charlotte dropped her fork.

"Is she okay?"

Rebecca smiled for the first time in weeks.

"She's alive."

Emily had been living under federal protection for nearly eight years.

After turning over evidence to investigators, she had agreed never to contact anyone connected to the case.

Until Charlotte received the anonymous letter.

Emily said she knew the investigation was finally moving again.

She wanted Charlotte to have the rabbit because she believed one day the truth would matter more than her own safety.

The following week, under FBI supervision, we met her.

She looked older.

More tired.

But when Charlotte walked into the room holding the patched-up rabbit...

Emily began crying before either of them spoke.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I couldn't tell you why I left."

Charlotte hugged her anyway.

"You don't have to."

Emily looked at me.

"I failed to protect a lot of children."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You protected the evidence."

Rebecca placed the recovered microSD card onto the conference table.

"It took years."

"But because you refused to destroy this..."

"...hundreds of families may finally learn what really happened."

Outside, reporters waited for statements.

Inside, there was only quiet.

Charlotte placed the rabbit between us.

Its torn seam had been stitched closed once again.

This time...

May you like

not to hide the truth.

But because it had already been set free.
