Part 7: The Gala and the Trap

We decided to use the upcoming annual benefit gala for the Ashford Maternity Protection Initiative as our battlefield. It was a high-profile event, held at the Grand Plaza Hotel downtown, heavily covered by the media, and designed to raise funds for hospital security infrastructure across the state.

It was the exact type of event Isabella would despise—a public celebration of my survival and our family's triumph over her malice.

"She won't be able to resist," Richard explained to the tactical security team we had assembled. "Our intelligence indicates that Isabella’s psychological state has deteriorated significantly since her family’s financial collapse. She blames Khloe for everything. She believes that if she can humiliate or harm Khloe at this specific event, she will somehow restore her family's honor."

The security plan was a masterclass in deception. We publicly announced that Sophia would be joining us for the opening ceremony of the gala to receive a honorary youth advocacy award. In reality, Sophia would be securely hidden at a highly classified safehouse miles away, guarded by federal marshals. We used a heavily disguised body double—a child of a trusted security operative—for the public arrivals.

The night of the gala arrived. The ballroom was stunning, filled with crystal chandeliers, soaring floral arrangements, and hundreds of influential guests. Marcus stood by my side, looking regal in his tuxedo, though his eyes never stopped scanning the crowd. I wore a emerald green gown, my posture straight, radiating a confidence I wanted Isabella to see through whatever camera or disguise she was using.

At 9:00 PM, the gala transitioned to the main dinner presentations. I walked backstage to prepare for my keynote speech. The backstage area was a maze of concrete corridors, production equipment, and dressing rooms.

Suddenly, the lights flickered. The heavy thrum of the hotel’s main generator stammered, and the lights went completely dark, plunged into the dull red glow of the emergency backup system.

Over my earpiece, Richard’s voice crackled through static. "Marcus! Khloe! We have a physical breach at the basement power grid! Someone cut the main fiber-optic lines! The security cameras are down!"

Before I could turn back toward the stage doors, a heavy steel door at the end of the corridor slammed shut, the electronic lock clicking into place. I was trapped in the secondary hallway.

From the shadows near the service elevator, a figure stepped out.

She wore a hotel staff uniform, but she had thrown off the cap. Her blonde hair was disheveled, her eyes wide and manic in the crimson emergency light. In her right hand, she held a compact, heavy-duty industrial taser.

"Did you really think your little guards could keep me out, Khloe?" Isabella whispered, her voice echoing chillingly in the narrow corridor. "You took my freedom. You took my family’s money. You took everything I was entitled to."
