Chapter 4 – The Dead Husband's Secret

Rain lashed against the windshield as Alessandro's convoy cut through Manhattan.

Six black SUVs moved like a single machine.

Police escorts cleared intersections without sirens.

Inside the lead vehicle, silence weighed heavier than the storm.

Emma slept against my shoulder, her fever finally easing after Dr. Rosen had given her medicine before we left the mansion.

She looked peaceful.

I envied her.

Because every mile carried me closer to a truth I wasn't sure I wanted to face.

If Daniel was alive...

Why hadn't he come home?

Alessandro never looked away from the road ahead.

"Marco."

"Yes, sir."

"Status."

Marco glanced at the encrypted tablet mounted between the seats.

"St. Gabriel Medical Center confirmed a patient checked in under the name Daniel Carter at 7:14 p.m."

"Room?"

"They won't disclose it over the phone."

"They became... cooperative after our legal department contacted them."

Alessandro nodded once.

"No media."

"Already contained."

"No police."

"Not yet."

He finally looked at me.

"I need facts before headlines."

I clutched Emma tighter.

"My husband would never abandon us."

The words came out before I could stop them.

Alessandro didn't answer immediately.

He chose his words carefully.

"I believe that..."

"...you believe that."

I looked away.

It wasn't an accusation.

It was uncertainty.

And somehow...

That hurt more.

Three Years Earlier

The memory returned without warning.

Daniel had come home late.

His boots were covered in gray cement dust.

His hands shook as he poured coffee he never drank.

"They're going to kill people."

I looked up from folding baby clothes.

"What happened?"

"They're using recycled steel in the East River project."

"They bribed the inspectors."

"If those foundations fail..."

He never finished the sentence.

Instead, he took my hands.

"If anything happens to me..."

I immediately covered his mouth.

"Don't."

He smiled sadly.

"I love you."

"They can't scare me into silence."

Three days later...

The company called.

There had been an explosion.

Present

The convoy stopped beneath the emergency entrance of St. Gabriel Medical Center.

Private security had already secured the building.

Doctors and nurses whispered as Alessandro Moretti stepped through the sliding doors.

Power entered with him.

People instinctively moved aside.

Not because they feared him.

Because they sensed something enormous was unfolding.

The hospital administrator hurried forward.

"Mr. Moretti."

"I understand you're looking for Mr. Daniel Carter."

"Where is he?"

The administrator hesitated.

"I'm afraid..."

"He checked out."

"When?"

"Thirty-one minutes ago."

A silence settled over the lobby.

Marco looked at his watch.

"That was just before we left the mansion."

Someone had warned him.

"Security footage."

Alessandro's voice remained calm.

"I need authorization."

"You have thirty seconds."

The administrator disappeared.

While we waited, Emma stirred.

"Mama?"

"I'm here."

She rubbed sleepy eyes.

"Are we finding Daddy?"

I swallowed.

"I don't know."

She smiled anyway.

"I knew he wasn't in Heaven."

My heart cracked a little more.

Ten minutes later...

Hospital surveillance footage filled the monitor inside the security office.

The timestamp read:

9:46 PM

A man wearing a baseball cap and dark jacket walked through the emergency exit.

He kept his head down.

His beard was longer.

His hair had streaks of gray.

But when he turned toward the camera...

I stopped breathing.

Daniel.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

I reached toward the screen with trembling fingers.

"Daniel..."

He wasn't alone.

Another figure walked beside him.

A woman.

Elegant.

Expensively dressed.

Blonde.

She kept sunglasses on despite the rain.

Marco enlarged the frame.

The room fell silent.

It was Vanessa.

My knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

She had been at the engagement party.

The timestamp said she had left the hospital barely an hour before announcing her fake pregnancy.

Impossible.

Unless...

She had visited Daniel first.

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

"Continue."

The video advanced.

Daniel handed Vanessa a thick brown envelope.

She opened it.

Her face turned pale.

She said something.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

Not violently.

Desperately.

Then...

She slapped him.

Hard.

He never fought back.

She got into a waiting black Mercedes.

He walked away alone into the rain.

The footage ended.

No one spoke.

Finally...

Attorney Kaplan broke the silence.

"They knew each other."

I stared at the frozen screen.

"But why?"

Marco received another notification.

"Sir."

"What?"

"I identified the envelope."

"How?"

"It had a shipping label."

He zoomed in.

Barely visible.

But readable.

Moretti Biogenetics Laboratory

I frowned.

"What is that?"

Alessandro answered quietly.

"My family's private research facility."

I looked at him in confusion.

"You own a genetics laboratory?"

"My grandfather founded it."

"We mostly conduct hereditary disease research."

Kaplan suddenly looked alarmed.

"The folder in Vanessa's safe..."

"...was labeled DNA."

The pieces began fitting together.

None of us liked the picture they formed.

An elderly physician entered the room.

"I believe I can help."

He introduced himself.

"Dr. Leonard Weiss."

"I treated Daniel Carter tonight."

Every eye turned toward him.

"What happened?"

The doctor removed his glasses.

"He came for blood work."

"Routine?"

"No."

The doctor's expression grew serious.

"He requested an emergency paternity comparison."

Silence.

"A what?"

"He brought two DNA samples."

"He wanted them tested immediately."

My voice barely existed.

"Whose?"

Dr. Weiss looked directly at me.

"One sample belonged to Daniel Carter."

"The other..."

He hesitated.

"...belonged to Emma."

The room disappeared around me.

Emma.

My daughter.

Daniel had secretly tested his own child?

Why?

He had never questioned she was his.

Never.

Not once.

Dr. Weiss continued.

"The laboratory completed the comparison this evening."

"Results?"

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

"I shouldn't disclose confidential information."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"This concerns an active criminal investigation."

Dr. Weiss slowly nodded.

"The report concluded..."

"...that Daniel Carter is not Emma's biological father."

The words struck like lightning.

"No."

I stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

"I never..."

Tears blurred my vision.

"I never betrayed him."

"I swear."

Emma clung to my hand.

"Mama?"

I dropped to my knees and hugged her.

"I know, sweetheart."

"I know."

My entire body shook.

Someone had manipulated the test.

They had to have.

Because there was no other explanation.

Alessandro watched me carefully.

He believed me.

I could see it in his eyes.

Not because of evidence.

Because he had spent three years observing who I was.

He knew I wasn't lying.

Marco interrupted the silence.

"Sir..."

"I found another file."

He projected an encrypted email recovered from Daniel's hospital account.

The message had been sent only two hours earlier.

Its subject line read:

If Anything Happens to Me... Tell Amelia the Truth.

Everyone leaned closer.

Marco opened the email.

Only one sentence appeared.

"Emma isn't my biological daughter... but she has Moretti blood."

The room fell completely silent.

Every pair of eyes slowly turned toward Alessandro.

His expression didn't change.

But for the first time that night...

The most powerful man in New York looked genuinely shocked.

Because there was only one thing that sentence could possibly mean.

And if it was true...

The little girl sleeping peacefully in my arms wasn't connected to Daniel at all.

May you like

She was somehow connected...

To the Moretti family itself.
