Chapter 8 – Blood Never Lies

The second bullet tore through the office wall less than an inch above my head.
Concrete dust rained across the floor.
Emma screamed.
I wrapped my body around her instinctively, shielding her from the shattered glass.
Marco rolled beside us, drawing his sidearm.
"Stay down!"
A third shot shattered the fluorescent light overhead.
Darkness swallowed the room again.
Only the flashing red emergency lights remained.
Outside the broken window...
Rain poured across Manhattan.
The sniper was somewhere on a nearby rooftop.
Invisible.
Patient.
Professional.
"He isn't shooting randomly," Marco said.
"He's waiting for a clear shot at Emma."
My blood turned cold.
A child.
Three years old.
Someone had sent a professional assassin to kill a little girl.
Attorney Kaplan crawled toward the opposite wall.
"There has to be another exit."
Dr. Weiss pulled open a maintenance map mounted behind the office door.
"There."
He pointed to a narrow service corridor.
"It connects to the old surgical wing."
Marco shook his head.
"Too obvious."
"They'll expect us to run."
Emma buried her face against my shoulder.
"Mama..."
"Did I do something bad?"
My heart broke.
"No, sweetheart."
"You did something brave."
"Why does everyone keep trying to hurt us?"
I couldn't answer.
Because there was no answer a three-year-old should ever have to hear.
Suddenly...
The office door burst open.
Every weapon turned toward it.
Then Alessandro stepped inside.
His suit was soaked from the rain.
His white shirt carried streaks of blood.
Not his own.
Marco immediately stood.
"Sir!"
"I'm fine."
"Victor?"
"He escaped."
"What about the gunmen?"
"They're leaving."
Alessandro looked toward the shattered window.
"Except one."
The sniper.
He walked directly toward Emma.
Ignoring everyone else.
He knelt in front of her.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
"My ears hurt."
He smiled gently.
"Loud noises can do that."
Without thinking...
Emma reached out and touched the cut above his eyebrow.
"You're bleeding."
"It looks worse than it is."
She carefully wiped away the blood with the sleeve of her little sweater.
No one in the room spoke.
The gesture was so natural.
So innocent.
It felt like watching a father comfort his own child...
Or perhaps...
A daughter comforting her father.
Marco's tablet suddenly beeped.
"The FBI is here."
Alessandro nodded.
"Bring them."
Minutes later...
Special Agent Evelyn Brooks entered the office.
She was in her early forties.
Calm.
Sharp-eyed.
The kind of woman who noticed everything.
She carried a sealed evidence case.
"I came as fast as I could."
Her gaze immediately fell upon the flash drive.
"I assume this is what everyone's trying to kill for."
"Yes."
She placed the case on the table.
"Then let's find out why."
The drive was connected to a secure FBI laptop.
This time...
A hidden partition appeared.
Password protected.
Marco frowned.
"I didn't see this before."
Emma looked at the keyboard.
"Daddy liked boats."
Everyone turned toward her.
"He always used the boat's name."
"What boat?"
"The little sailboat."
I closed my eyes.
"The Sea Sparrow."
Marco typed:
SEASPARROW
The hidden partition unlocked.
Only three files appeared.
One video.
One DNA database.
One document titled:
THE ORIGINAL BIRTH RECORDS
Agent Brooks opened the birth records first.
Hospital.
Date.
Delivery room.
Every page carried official seals.
But one document stood apart.
A handwritten note signed by Daniel Carter.
It read:
"If this file is ever found, the child known as Emma Carter must be protected at all costs. She is innocent. Her existence exposes Project Horizon."
Agent Brooks looked up.
"Who's Project Horizon?"
Alessandro answered quietly.
"The reason my father was murdered."
Silence filled the room.
"What?"
Kaplan stared at him.
"My father discovered financial irregularities weeks before his death."
"I always believed it was organized crime."
He shook his head slowly.
"I was wrong."
"It was inside my own family."
Brooks opened the DNA database.
Thousands of encrypted records appeared.
Marco searched for:
Emma Carter
One file.
Status:
Verified
He clicked.
The room became completely silent.
The report was astonishingly detailed.
Maternal DNA Match:
Amelia Carter
99.9999% Confirmed
Tears instantly filled my eyes.
I was her mother.
No laboratory.
No conspiracy.
No stolen record could change that.
Emma really had grown beneath my heart.
Marco continued reading.
Paternal DNA Match:
Alessandro Moretti
99.9998% Confirmed
No one spoke.
Not even Emma.
Alessandro closed his eyes.
Only briefly.
When he opened them again...
Something had changed.
The uncertainty was gone.
The test had answered the question.
Blood never lied.
I looked at him.
Then at Emma.
Then back again.
"So..."
My voice cracked.
"She's yours."
He nodded once.
"Biologically."
A painful silence followed.
Finally...
He looked directly at me.
"But she's also yours."
He glanced at Emma.
"And Daniel's."
"He chose to be her father."
"No DNA report will ever erase that."
Fresh tears streamed down my face.
For the first time that night...
Someone understood.
Emma looked between us.
"I have two daddies?"
The room almost smiled.
Almost.
I kissed the top of her head.
"You had one daddy who loved you very much."
She nodded seriously.
"And Mr. Alessandro?"
Alessandro hesitated.
Then quietly answered,
"If you'll let me..."
"...I'd like to love you too."
Emma considered the offer with all the gravity a three-year-old could summon.
Finally...
She reached into the pocket of her little cardigan.
She pulled out half a wrapped strawberry candy.
The other half had clearly melted.
She held it out.
"Daddy always said..."
"...sharing means you're family."
Alessandro accepted the sticky candy as though it were priceless.
"I think your daddy was a very wise man."
The emotional moment lasted only seconds.
Marco interrupted.
"There's one file left."
The video.
Daniel appeared once again.
He looked thinner than before.
More exhausted.
Behind him stood a wall calendar.
The date revealed something impossible.
The recording had been made...
Two days ago.
I gasped.
"He was alive."
"Recently."
Daniel looked into the camera.
"If you're watching this..."
"...they finally found me."
He smiled sadly.
"Don't waste time looking."
"I'm already gone."
"I've been dying for months."
Dr. Weiss immediately frowned.
"What?"
Daniel continued.
"The chemicals I was exposed to during the harbor explosion weren't an accident."
"They poisoned me."
"I don't have much time."
He coughed violently.
Blood stained his hand.
"I chose to disappear."
"Because staying alive long enough to finish this..."
"...mattered more than saying goodbye."
My tears became uncontrollable.
Daniel looked directly into the camera one last time.
"Amelia..."
"I'm sorry I left you alone."
"Alessandro..."
"If you've learned the truth..."
"Protect them."
"They're coming for Emma."
"They always were."
He reached forward.
As though trying to touch us through the screen.
"One last thing."
"The person who ordered everything..."
"...isn't Vanessa."
Everyone froze.
Daniel whispered the final words.
"It was..."
Suddenly...
The video cut to black.
Corrupted.
The last name was missing.
Marco stared at the frozen screen.
"He was about to identify the mastermind."
Before anyone could react...
Agent Brooks' phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What?"
The room waited.
She slowly lowered the phone.
"The federal courthouse..."
"...just exploded."
Kaplan frowned.
"What does that have to do with us?"
Brooks looked directly at Alessandro.
"The evidence vault."
"The one containing your father's murder investigation."
She took a slow breath.
"Someone just destroyed every official record connected to Project Horizon."
Alessandro looked at the damaged flash drive.
Then at Emma.
Then out the rain-streaked window.
"They're erasing the past."
His voice became cold.
"But they forgot one thing."
He gently took Emma's small hand in his.
May you like
"The strongest evidence..."
"...is still alive."
