Chapter 6 – The Billionaire’s Choice

The first explosion shook the intensive care wing.

The second shattered every window facing the east parking garage.

Emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the corridors of St. Gabriel Medical Center in a dim crimson glow.

Screams echoed from the lower floors.

Doctors rushed patients into operating rooms.

Nurses pulled children away from waiting areas.

The smell of smoke drifted through the ventilation system.

Marco's hand was already inside his jacket.

He drew his pistol in one smooth motion.

"This isn't a robbery."

Alessandro nodded.

"They came for the flash drive."

I instinctively wrapped both arms around Emma.

She buried her face against my neck.

"Mama..."

"I'm scared."

"I know, baby."

"It's okay."

But it wasn't okay.

Nothing about tonight had been okay.

Three hours earlier, I had been worried about paying next month's rent.

Now armed men were storming a hospital because my dead husband had hidden evidence inside my daughter's wooden toy.

Marco pressed his earpiece again.

"Unit One."

Nothing.

"Unit Two."

Only static.

"They're using military-grade signal jammers."

Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Professional."

A frightened nurse burst into the room.

"They're shooting security guards!"

"We've locked the pediatric ward."

"Please..."

She looked at Alessandro.

"...help us."

He didn't hesitate.

"Marco."

"Take two men and secure the children's floor."

Marco frowned.

"You'll be exposed."

"There are over forty children upstairs."

Alessandro answered quietly,

"They don't get a vote in this."

Marco nodded once.

"Yes, sir."

He disappeared into the hallway with two security officers.

Only five of us remained.

Alessandro.

Attorney Kaplan.

Dr. Weiss.

Emma.

And me.

The flash drive rested in Alessandro's palm.

A piece of black plastic no larger than my thumb.

Yet powerful enough to bring armed killers into a hospital.

The emergency lights flickered again.

Then...

A voice echoed through the hospital speakers.

Calm.

Male.

Distorted electronically.

"Good evening, Mr. Moretti."

Every muscle in Alessandro's body stiffened.

"We know you have the drive."

The voice continued.

"Give it to us."

"And everyone lives."

A pause.

"Refuse..."

"...and this hospital becomes your responsibility."

Dr. Weiss whispered,

"My God..."

Kaplan quietly locked the office door.

"They've taken control of the building."

The speaker crackled again.

"We'll give you five minutes."

Then silence.

I looked at Alessandro.

"They'll kill everyone."

His expression remained unreadable.

"No."

"They'll kill everyone regardless."

I stared at him.

"How can you know that?"

"Because witnesses are expensive."

He walked to the window overlooking the emergency entrance.

Black SUVs surrounded the hospital.

At least twenty armed men.

Disciplined.

Organized.

Not gang members.

Former military.

Private contractors.

Professionals.

Marco suddenly returned.

"They're moving patients into the basement."

"Good."

"We've secured the pediatric wing."

"Casualties?"

"Three guards."

"One surgeon."

Silence.

Alessandro looked down at the flash drive.

"So."

Marco understood immediately.

"The choice."

Everyone in the room knew what he meant.

Give them the drive...

Or risk innocent lives.

I stepped closer.

"Open it."

Kaplan looked surprised.

"What?"

"Open the drive."

"If Daniel died protecting it..."

"...we should know why."

Marco plugged the USB into an encrypted laptop.

A password prompt appeared.

No one knew it.

Until Emma quietly spoke.

"Pirates."

Everyone looked at her.

"Daddy said pirates always use birthdays."

Marco typed:

0412

Emma's birthday.

The screen unlocked.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Contracts.

Wire transfers.

Secret recordings.

Bribery ledgers.

Photos.

Videos.

Then...

One folder labeled:

MORETTI

Alessandro opened it.

The first document made him stop breathing.

CONFIDENTIAL

Operation Successor

Objective:

Replace Alessandro Moretti with a controllable legal heir.

No one spoke.

Marco opened the next page.

Vanessa Cole.

Primary Candidate.

Phase One:

Marriage.

Completed.

Phase Two:

Pregnancy Announcement.

Completed.

Phase Three:

Inheritance Transfer.

Pending.

Kaplan whispered,

"My God..."

Another document.

Obstacle Analysis

Primary Threat:

Alessandro Moretti.

Secondary Threat:

Daniel Carter.

Recommended Action:

Permanent Removal.

My heart stopped.

Daniel hadn't died because of construction fraud.

He'd died because he discovered this.

Marco opened the final video.

It had been recorded secretly.

Daniel sat alone in a dark motel room.

His face looked exhausted.

He stared directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...I'm probably dead."

My tears came instantly.

Daniel smiled sadly.

"Amelia..."

"I'm sorry."

"I couldn't come home."

"They were watching you."

"If I contacted you..."

"...they would kill you."

He took a long breath.

"Emma isn't my biological daughter."

"I know how impossible that sounds."

"But listen carefully."

"You never betrayed me."

"Neither did I."

The room became perfectly still.

Daniel continued.

"The hospital switched babies."

"I found the records."

"They targeted wealthy bloodlines."

"They stole newborns."

"They replaced infants."

"They sold inheritances."

He held up a folder.

"Emma is one of those children."

I gasped.

"No..."

Daniel nodded toward the camera.

"She's your daughter."

"But she isn't mine."

"And she isn't who they told everyone she was."

He swallowed hard.

"Emma..."

"...is Alessandro Moretti's daughter."

The room exploded into silence.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Alessandro slowly sat down.

For perhaps the first time in his adult life...

He looked completely lost.

The video continued.

"Eight years ago..."

"You donated blood after the harbor bombing."

"The laboratory illegally stored your DNA."

"Months later..."

"They used your genetic material during an experimental fertility program."

"They created heirs..."

"...without consent."

Kaplan looked horrified.

"That's impossible."

Dr. Weiss answered quietly.

"No."

"It isn't."

"Not with enough money."

Daniel looked exhausted.

"I don't know who Emma's biological mother is."

"I only know Amelia gave birth."

"Someone manipulated the embryos."

"They needed a child carrying Moretti DNA."

"They wanted control over the inheritance."

"They never expected me to discover the records."

The video suddenly glitched.

Gunshots echoed.

Daniel looked toward the motel door.

"They're here."

He smiled one last time.

"Tell Emma..."

"...being loved matters more than being related."

The screen went black.

Silence.

I couldn't process what I'd heard.

Emma...

Was still my daughter.

Nothing could ever change that.

But somehow...

She also carried Alessandro's blood.

A single tear rolled down Alessandro's face.

He wiped it away before anyone else noticed.

Then he looked at Emma.

She smiled sleepily.

"Hi."

He smiled back.

The faintest smile.

"I've been wondering..."

"...why you have my mother's eyes."

The hospital speakers crackled once more.

"Time's up, Mr. Moretti."

The distorted voice sounded almost amused.

"Bring us the flash drive."

"Or we'll start with the children upstairs."

Alessandro slowly stood.

His expression had changed.

The uncertainty was gone.

The billionaire.

The businessman.

The empire builder.

They disappeared.

Only a father remained.

He looked at Marco.

"Prepare the drive."

Marco frowned.

"You're surrendering?"

"No."

Alessandro slipped the real flash drive into his pocket.

Then handed Marco an identical-looking encrypted backup drive.

"We're giving them..."

"...exactly what they think they came for."

He turned toward me.

"Amelia."

I looked up.

"If I don't come back..."

"Raise Emma to know one thing."

"What?"

He looked toward the little girl sleeping peacefully against my shoulder.

"She was wanted."

Then he picked up the fake drive...

May you like

Unlocked the office door...

And walked alone into the dark hallway to face the men who had been hunting his family for years.
