Chapter 10 - We Were Married Surrounded By Love—And Finally Found Our Happily Ever After**

Our wedding was everything I had ever dreamed of, and nothing like the one Vanessa had planned.

It was small.

Intimate.

Just close friends and family.

We got married in the garden of the estate, surrounded by flowers and the people we loved most.

David was my best man.

Marcus was there, smiling and taking photos.

My board of directors came, as did many of my employees.

Nora’s family traveled from out of state to be there.

And Lily was our flower girl.

She wore a white dress that matched Nora’s, and she carried a basket of rose petals, scattering them down the aisle with a huge smile on her face.

Halfway down, she stopped and waved at me, and everyone laughed.

Nora looked like an angel when she walked down the aisle on her father’s arm.

Her dress was simple and beautiful, and she was glowing.

I cried when I saw her.

I didn’t even try to hide it.

The ceremony was short and heartfelt.

We wrote our own vows.

Nora promised to love me, to stand by me, to build a life full of laughter and safety for our family.

I promised to love her and Lily forever, to protect them, to give them the life they deserved.

And then we did something special, just for Lily.

The officiant asked her to come forward.

He held up a second, smaller ring—a child’s ring, with a tiny diamond that matched Nora’s.

“Lily,” he said, smiling down at her.

“Today, your mother is marrying Ethan. And Ethan has asked if you would like to be officially adopted, to become his daughter in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of everyone here. Do you accept?”

Lily nodded so hard her braids bounced.

Then she turned to me and signed I love you, Daddy for everyone to see.

I knelt down and slipped the ring onto her finger.

“I love you too, baby girl,” I said, hugging her tight.

The guests cheered and wiped away tears.

Nora leaned down and kissed both of us, and the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, and father and daughter.

That night, after the reception, after all the guests had left, the three of us sat together on the porch swing, looking out over the gardens.

Lily was fast asleep between us, her head on Nora’s lap, her feet in mine.

Nora leaned her head on my shoulder, her wedding ring catching the moonlight.

“Can you believe this is real?” she whispered.

I kissed the top of her head.

“It’s real,” I said.

“We’re real. And we’re safe. And we’re happy.”

I thought about Vanessa, rotting in prison, alone with her greed and her hatred.

She had tried to take everything from me.

But instead, she had led me to this.

To Nora.

To Lily.

To the kind of love and happiness I had never dared to hope for.

Lily stirred in her sleep and mumbled something, snuggling closer to Nora.

I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

She was the bravest person I had ever known.

That little girl, with her missing-eye rabbit and her trembling hands, had changed everything.

She had saved my life.

And in return, I would spend the rest of mine making sure she knew nothing but love and safety and joy.

Somewhere in the distance, a cricket chirped.

The moon shone down on us, warm and bright.

The air smelled like roses and summer.

I held my wife’s hand, and I watched my daughter sleep.

And I knew, with absolute certainty, that everything was going to be okay.

We had survived the darkness.

May you like

We had found each other.

And our happily ever after was only just beginning.
