Chapter 9 - I Asked Her To Marry Me—And Lily Asked To Be My Daughter**

Six months later, I planned the perfect proposal.

I took Nora and Lily to the coast cottage my grandmother had left me, the same one where she had taught me sign language all those years ago.

It was small and cozy, with a porch that looked out over the ocean.

We spent the day walking on the beach, building sandcastles, collecting seashells.

Lily ran ahead, chasing seagulls, her laughter carried away by the wind.

When the sun started to set, I led Nora to the end of the pier.

Lily was waiting there, holding a small box in her hands, grinning from ear to ear.

She had known about my plan for weeks, and she had been bursting to keep the secret.

Nora looked from Lily to me, her eyes curious.

“What’s going on?” she asked, laughing a little.

I took a deep breath and got down on one knee.

I pulled out a ring—simple, elegant, with a small diamond that had belonged to my grandmother.

“Nora,” I said, my voice steady and full of love.

“You and Lily walked into my life when I needed you most. You saved me. You loved me when I was broken. You gave me a family. I can’t imagine my life without either of you. Will you marry me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life loving you and being the father Lily deserves?”

Nora covered her mouth with her hand, tears streaming down her face.

She nodded, unable to speak for a moment.

“Yes,” she whispered finally.

“Yes, Ethan. I will marry you.”

Lily cheered and ran over, throwing her arms around both of us.

I slipped the ring onto Nora’s finger, and she kissed me, salty from tears and the ocean air.

Then Lily pulled back, looking at me with her big, serious eyes.

She raised her small hands and signed something that made my heart break and soar at the same time.

“Will you be my daddy?”

I pulled her into my arms, holding her tight, my own tears falling now.

“Yes, baby,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.

“I will be your daddy. Forever.”

That night, we sat together on the porch, wrapped in blankets, watching the stars come out over the ocean.

Nora was leaning against my shoulder, Lily curled up in my lap, fast asleep after the excitement of the day.

I thought about everything that had happened.

The engagement party.

Lily’s warning.

The poison.

Vanessa’s trial.

The fear.

The pain.

And then the healing.

The love.

The family I had found when I least expected it.

My grandmother had always told me that everything happens for a reason.

I used to think that was just something people said to make themselves feel better about bad things happening.

But now I understood.

If I hadn’t lost my hearing, if Vanessa hadn’t tried to kill me, if Lily hadn’t been brave enough to speak up… I never would have found this.

Never would have found Nora and Lily.

Never would have known this kind of happiness.

I kissed the top of Lily’s head.

I kissed Nora’s temple.

And I thanked God for the brave little girl who had saved my life, and for the woman who had given my life meaning again.

Everything was perfect.
