Chapter 8 - We Built A New Life Together—And Found Love Where We Least Expected It**

Moving Nora and Lily into the estate was the best decision I ever made.

The big, cold house that had once felt so empty was suddenly full of life.

Lily’s laughter echoed through the hallways.

Her drawings covered the refrigerator doors.

Her toys were scattered in every room.

And the smell of Nora’s cooking filled the kitchen every evening.

I had never been so happy.

I hired a private tutor for Lily, someone who was fluent in sign language and could help her with her studies.

She was so smart.

Curious about everything.

Always asking questions.

She loved exploring the gardens, chasing butterflies, helping the gardener plant flowers.

She especially loved the cactus garden I had planted in memory of my grandmother.

“Tough plants,” she signed once, touching one of the spiny leaves.

“Like you.”

I cried that night, happy tears, because she was right.

We were both tough.

We had both survived things no one should have to survive.

And now we had each other.

As the months passed, my relationship with Nora deepened.

It started slowly.

Late-night conversations in the kitchen after Lily had gone to bed.

Shared laughter over silly things Lily had done.

Comforting each other when the memories of Vanessa and the fear came back.

She was kind.

Gentle.

Brave.

Everything Vanessa had pretended to be.

And she loved Lily more than anything in the world.

I found myself looking forward to coming home from work just to see her.

To hear her laugh.

To see her smile.

And I realized, slowly and then all at once, that I was falling in love with her.

I was scared to say anything at first.

Scared I would ruin the beautiful thing we had built.

Scared she wouldn’t feel the same way.

Scared I would lose the family I had finally found.

But then one evening, as we sat on the porch watching Lily play with the golden retriever puppy we had gotten her, Nora reached over and took my hand.

“Thank you,” she said softly.

“For everything. For giving us this life. For loving Lily like she was your own.”

I turned to look at her.

The sunset was behind her, painting her face in gold and pink.

She was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

“I should be thanking you,” I said.

“You and Lily saved me. You gave me a reason to fight. You gave me my life back. And I… I love you, Nora. I love both of you more than anything.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

She leaned in and kissed me.

Softly.

Gently.

And when she pulled back, she was smiling.

“I love you too, Ethan,” she whispered.

“I have for a long time. I was just too scared to say it.”

Inside the house, Lily turned on the lamp in her bedroom window and waved at us.

We waved back, our hands still laced together.

Everything felt right.

Everything felt like home.
