Chapter 10 - The Name Nobody ExpectedFor the first time that day, Victoria could not move.

Arthur held the statement in both hands.

Daniel stared at his sister.

Noah stepped protectively closer to the coffin.

Inside, Claire's terrified eyes locked onto Victoria.

Not with relief.

With fear.

Victoria shook her head.

“No.”

Arthur's voice remained calm.

“Claire named you.”

“That's impossible.”

“The statement is notarized.”

“No.”

Daniel lifted the handgun again.

This time toward Victoria.

She stared at him.

“You believe this?”

“I don't know what to believe.”

The cruelty of those words nearly made her laugh.

Minutes earlier, he had pointed a gun toward Noah.

Now toward his own sister.

Fear had stripped away whatever civilized mask the Whitmore family once wore.

Noah looked at Claire.

“Mom, was it her?”

Claire's breathing quickened.

Her eyes moved toward Victoria.

Everyone waited.

Noah tapped three times on the coffin.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Their signal.

Yes.

Claire did not answer.

Instead, she moved her eyes downward.

Again and again.

Noah noticed.

“There's something else.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What?”

Noah reached through the jagged opening as far as he could.

Claire pushed an object toward him from inside.

His fingers found it.

He pulled out a tiny gold locket.

Victoria gasped.

She knew it.

She had given that locket to Claire eight years earlier.

Noah opened it.

Inside was not a photograph.

A tiny folded piece of paper had been hidden behind the frame.

Noah unfolded it.

Only three words were written there.

VICTORIA KNOWS WHY.

The room turned toward her.

Daniel's face filled with rage.

“What did you do?”

Victoria backed away.

“Nothing.”

Arthur watched her carefully.

“Then tell us what Claire meant.”

Victoria's breathing became uneven.

For years, she had hated the way Daniel treated Noah.

She had hated the family dinners.

The class prejudice.

The quiet cruelty.

The way Claire's life became smaller after marrying into wealth.

But hatred was not the same as innocence.

And now the entire funeral hall was waiting for the truth.

Victoria looked toward Claire.

Then at the flash drive in her hand.

Finally, she spoke.

“Claire came to me four weeks ago.”

Noah's eyes narrowed.

“She told me she was afraid of Daniel.”

Daniel shouted.

“Liar!”

Victoria ignored him.

“But she was more afraid of the board.”

Arthur's face tightened.

Victoria continued.

“She discovered the foundation was being used to move money through shell organizations. She wanted to expose everything.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“And you helped her?”

Victoria looked at him.

“At first.”

The room went still.

Noah asked the question nobody else dared to.

“What changed?”

Victoria looked at the white coffin.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“The board offered me something.”

Daniel's face hardened.

“How much?”

“It wasn't money.”

“Then what?”

Victoria hesitated.

Then she looked directly at Noah.

“They showed me a sealed adoption file.”

Noah froze.

Victoria's next words shattered the final illusion holding the room together.

“Daniel isn't just your stepfather.”

Daniel's handgun lowered.

Noah stared at him.

Victoria continued.

“According to the file, Daniel is your biological father.”

Noah stopped breathing.

Inside the coffin, Claire began crying harder.

Daniel's face collapsed in horror.

“That is not possible.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I thought so too.”

Noah backed away from everyone.

All his life, Daniel had treated him as an outsider.

A charity case.

An inconvenience from Claire's poorer past.

A boy who did not belong in the mansion.

And now a sealed document suggested Daniel had rejected his own son without even knowing it.

Or worse—

perhaps he had known all along.

Arthur looked down at the papers in his hands.

“There's one problem.”

Victoria turned.

“What?”

“The adoption file isn't authentic.”

Daniel stared at him.

Noah went still.

Arthur continued.

“It was manufactured.”

“By who?” Victoria asked.

Arthur looked toward the missing hidden camera.

Then toward the closed doors.

“The same people who wanted Claire buried before she could testify.”

At that moment, Claire struck the casket lid three times.

Then three more.

Then three more.

Not yes.

Not no.

A warning.

Noah looked through the jagged hole.

Claire was staring past him.

Toward the rear balcony above the funeral hall.

Everyone slowly turned.

A lone figure stood behind the glass.

Watching.

Holding a remote control.

Daniel whispered a name.

And every trace of color vanished from Victoria's face.

Because the person standing above them was the one man whose funeral the Whitmore family had attended three years earlier.

Daniel and Victoria's father.

The billionaire patriarch officially declared dead.

And Claire had apparently discovered that he was still alive.

The figure raised one hand.

The funeral hall doors locked.

The chandelier went dark again.

And inside the coffin, Claire began pounding desperately against the lid.
