Chapter 5 - Step Away From the Casket“Step away from the casket!”

Daniel held the handgun in one hand.
He did not fire.
He did not need to.
The sight of it transformed the room.
Women gasped.
Men stepped backward.
The same guests who had ignored Noah's tears now suddenly noticed danger.
Yet no one moved toward the boy.
That was what Noah would remember.
Two hundred adults.
One terrified child.
And a billionaire holding a gun.
Still, no one moved.
Because wealth had trained them to hesitate before opposing men like Daniel Whitmore.
Noah stood frozen.
His bright red jacket made him look painfully small against the enormous white coffin.
Victoria moved between them.
“Put it down.”
Daniel's eyes stayed on Noah.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
“You're pointing a gun at a child.”
“He has destroyed a casket in the middle of a funeral.”
“Then call the police.”
Daniel's face tightened.
Neither of them missed the irony.
If the police came, someone would open the coffin.
Daniel looked toward security.
“Remove him.”
No guard moved.
Not anymore.
Because they had heard the sound from inside.
Noah looked through the cracked lid.
“Mom?”
Another muffled cry.
Faint.
Terrified.
Real.
The funeral hall seemed to stop breathing.
Daniel raised his voice.
“Stay away from it!”
Noah looked at him.
For years, Daniel had told him he was ungrateful.
Unrefined.
Difficult.
Too emotional.
Not ready for the responsibilities of the Whitmore world.
Now Noah finally understood.
Daniel had never been afraid Noah would embarrass the family.
He was afraid Noah would see through it.
Noah wiped his face with the sleeve of his red hoodie.
“Why won't you let me see my mother?”
Daniel said nothing.
And that silence answered more than words could.
Victoria slowly turned toward the mourners.
“You all heard that sound.”
Nobody spoke.
She pointed at the coffin.
“You heard her.”
Still silence.
A silver-haired man in the front row lowered his eyes.
A woman who had once called Noah “fortunate” began crying.
Victoria looked at them with disgust.
“Are you waiting for Daniel to give you permission to believe your own ears?”
The words hit the room like another hammer blow.
One man finally took out his phone.
Daniel shouted.
“No recordings!”
And there it was again.
Image before truth.
Reputation before humanity.
Control before rescue.
Then Noah moved suddenly.
He dropped to his knees beside the coffin.
Daniel's finger tightened around the handgun.
Victoria screamed his name.
But Noah had already placed his face near the jagged opening.
And from the darkness inside, a pair of terrified eyes opened.
They belonged to Claire.
She was alive.
Gray duct tape covered her mouth.
And when she saw her son, she began to cry.
But the most horrifying part was not that Claire was inside the casket.
It was what her frightened eyes did next.
May you like
They moved past Noah.
And locked directly onto Daniel.
