Chapter 4 - The Second Blow“Noah!”

Daniel's voice thundered across the funeral hall.

The boy barely heard him.

He was staring at the crack.

Something moved beneath it.

Or maybe he imagined it.

He could not tell.

His hands were trembling too badly.

For six days, adults had told him to be reasonable.

The funeral director.

Daniel's lawyers.

School administrators.

Security guards.

Even some of Claire's wealthy friends.

They all used different words to say the same thing.

Know your place.

Accept what you're told.

Stop asking questions important people don't want to answer.

Noah had learned early that poor children were expected to be grateful when rich adults made decisions for them.

If he protested, he was difficult.

If he cried, he was unstable.

If he asked too many questions, he was disrespectful.

Now Daniel took another step toward him.

“Put the hammer down, and we can discuss this privately.”

Noah laughed through his tears.

Privately.

That was the word powerful people used when they wanted truth removed from witnesses.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Daniel, let him open it.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“What did you say?”

“I said let him open the casket.”

A murmur spread through the room.

Daniel's expression became cold.

“This is my wife's funeral.”

Victoria stared at him.

“She was my sister-in-law.”

“And Noah is a child in shock.”

“No,” Victoria said. “He's Claire's son.”

The distinction mattered.

Everyone felt it.

Daniel had spent years treating Noah as an inconvenience attached to Claire's past.

Victoria had just reminded the entire room that the boy in the red jacket had a stronger right to demand answers than half the millionaires sitting in the front rows.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Victoria, think carefully about what you're doing.”

She almost smiled.

There it was.

Not innocence.

Not grief.

A warning.

She looked at the casket.

“Open it.”

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Noah raised the hammer again.

Security moved.

Victoria blocked them.

“Don't touch him.”

Daniel shouted.

“Enough!”

But the room had changed.

For the first time, Daniel no longer controlled its silence.

Noah swung.

The second impact struck the same cracked section.

The white surface splintered.

Wood snapped.

A jagged hole opened several inches wide.

No blood.

No visible body.

Only darkness.

Then a sound came from inside.

A faint, desperate moan.

Victoria covered her mouth.

Her eyes filled with horror.

“Oh my God…”

Every guest froze.

Noah dropped the hammer.

“Mom?”

Something inside the casket moved.

Daniel reached beneath his cream jacket.

Victoria saw the black handgun emerge.

And when Daniel pointed it forward, he did not aim at the coffin.

He aimed toward Noah.
