Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Midnight Ledger
By midnight, the grand estate was entirely empty of its matriarch. Victoria had departed in a hired car, leaving behind a trail of discarded hangers and the faint, lingering scent of her expensive French perfume.
Richard sat alone in his expansive mahogany-paneled study. The only illumination came from a single green-shaded banker’s lamp on his desk, casting long, monstrous shadows across the bookshelves. A crystal decanter of scotch sat at his elbow, half-empty, though the alcohol seemed to have no effect on the icy adrenaline pumping through his veins.
On the desk before him lay three neatly organized folders. These were not corporate portfolios or market analysis sheets; they were the financial lifelines of Victoria Carter.
Richard tapped his fingers rhythmically on the desk, his mind calculating with cold, predatory precision. He had spent his entire life mastering the art of negotiation, understanding leverage, and destroying opponents in the boardroom. He had never imagined he would have to use those skills against the woman he loved.
The door to the study opened quietly, and Arthur, the family’s trusted legal counsel and Richard’s lifelong friend, stepped inside. Arthur carried a heavy leather briefcase, his face etched with deep sympathy.
"I came as soon as I got your message, Richard," Arthur said gently, taking a seat across from the desk. "I'm incredibly sorry. I couldn't believe it when you told me."
"Don't waste your breath on sympathy, Arthur," Richard said, his voice flat. "Sympathy doesn't write contracts. I need you to initiate divorce proceedings immediately. Fault-based. Infidelity."
Arthur sighed, adjusting his glasses. "Victoria will fight it, Richard. Under the current state laws, even with infidelity, she is legally entitled to a significant portion of your shared assets, including the estate, the investment accounts, and a substantial alimony."
Richard leaned forward into the light, his eyes narrowing. "She won't get a single dime more than what keeps her out of poverty, Arthur. Look at the second folder."
Arthur opened the folder, skimming through the bank statements and credit card receipts. His eyebrows shot up. "These are transfers to a private account under the name of Daniel Ross. And these jewelry purchases..."
"She was using my secondary corporate account to fund his lifestyle," Richard explained, his voice chillingly devoid of emotion. "She was buying him watches, paying his apartment lease, and funding his tuition. That is embezzlement of corporate funds, Arthur. She didn't just cheat on me; she robbed my company to pay her lover."
Arthur let out a low whistle, realizing the immense leverage they now held. "If this goes to a criminal court, she faces prison time. Not to mention the absolute destruction of her social standing."
"Exactly," Richard said, leaning back into the shadows. "You will present her with a settlement agreement tomorrow morning. She waives all rights to the estate, all rights to my corporate shares, and she accepts a minimal, non-negotiable monthly stipend. In exchange, I do not file criminal charges, and I do not release the security footage of Daniel Ross entering this house to the press."

Arthur looked at his friend, seeing a ruthless businessman operating on pure survival instinct. "And if she refuses?"
"Then I will ruin her," Richard whispered, the absolute finality in his voice leaving no room for doubt. "I will strip her of her name, her freedom, and every single luxury she took for granted. She wanted a boy; let's see if that boy can support her when she has nothing left."
