Chapter 47

Chapter 47: The Handover Protocol
The corporate headquarters of Carter Global Logistics in Boston was a hive of activity on Friday afternoon. The executive floor had been cleared for a private ceremony—the formal signing of the succession documents that would officially transition Richard Carter from Chief Executive Officer to Chairman of the Board.
Richard sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, his signature fountain pen resting on the leather blotter before him. Arthur stood to his right, reviewing the final corporate resolution, while Marcus watched from the window seat, a proud smile on his face.
"Everything is in order, Richard," Arthur said, sliding the heavy parchment folder forward. "With this signature, you relinquish daily operational control to the newly appointed executive committee, retaining sole veto power as Chairman. The empire is safe."
Richard picked up the pen, but he didn't sign immediately. He looked at the empty chair to his right, the seat he had hoped Emma would occupy. He knew her work in Washington and Geneva was of vital national importance, but a small part of him had hoped she would be standing beside him when he finally stepped away from the machine he had spent his life building.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom opened quietly.
Emma walked in, her tailored grey travel suit showing the slight creases of a transatlantic flight, her eyes bright with a fierce, loving determination. She carried her briefcase, stepping into the room with the exact commanding grace that Richard had displayed for thirty years.
"Am I in time to audit the transition, Chairman?" Emma asked, a warm, brilliant smile breaking through her exhaustion.
Richard stood up, a profound wave of emotion washing over him as he pulled his daughter into a tight embrace. "You're exactly on time, Emma. I shouldn't have doubted you'd make it."
"I wouldn't miss the end of an era, Dad," Emma whispered, pulling back to stand beside his chair.

Richard sat back down, looked up at his daughter, and pressed the pen to the paper. He signed his name with a firm, unhesitating stroke. The corporate titan had officially stepped down.
As the executives applauded, Richard stood up and gestured for Emma to take the head of the table. She sat down, uncapping her vintage gold pen to sign as the primary witness to the succession. The transition was seamless. The old foundation had been cleared, and the new architecture of the Carter legacy was officially under her legal stewardship.
