Chapter 42: The Washington Gala

The spring season in Washington, D.C., brought the annual Constitutional Heritage Gala, an elite gathering of Supreme Court justices, cabinet secretaries, and international legal minds held in the grand ballroom of the National Portrait Gallery.

Emma walked through the historical hall, her emerald silk gown flowing elegantly around her. She was no longer just a clerk; she had been selected for a prestigious fellowship with the Department of Justice, her legal briefs already influencing policy decisions on corporate anti-trust regulation.

"Miss Carter, a word if you please," a voice called out from the crowd.

Emma turned to see the Deputy Attorney General approaching, accompanied by a senior partner from a top-tier international law firm. "Good evening, sir."

"Emma, this is Marcus Vance," the Deputy said, gesturing to his companion. "We were just discussing your recent white paper on digital logistics regulation. Marcus’s firm handles several major tech conglomerates, and he’s terrified of your enforcement models."

Emma smiled, her eyes sharp and confident. "The model is simple, Mr. Vance. If your clients operate on a foundation of hidden monopolies, our division will dismantle them. There’s no room for shadows in public utility."

Vance laughed, though there was a distinct note of respect in his eyes. "You have your father’s legendary precision, Miss Carter. I watched him handle the Vanguard merger a few years ago. He doesn't compromise."

"My father handles the corporate structure, Mr. Vance," Emma said smoothly, taking a glass of water from a passing tray. "I handle the constitutional framework. We both believe in structural integrity."

As the conversation continued, Emma looked across the ballroom and saw a familiar figure entering through the grand archway. It was Richard. He was dressed in a classic tuxedo, his silver hair catching the light of the chandeliers, his presence instantly drawing a circle of prominent politicians and business leaders.

He bypassed the dignitaries, his eyes locked entirely on his daughter. When he reached her side, he offered a warm, genuine smile to her companions before looking down at her.

"Am I late for the opening remarks, legal counsel?" Richard teased quietly.

"You're exactly on time, corporate titan," Emma smiled back, looping her arm through his.

Standing together in the center of the nation's capital, surrounded by the portraits of the individuals who had shaped history, father and daughter stood as a testament to survival. They had been dragged through the absolute depths of human betrayal, their names dragged through the mud of high-society gossip. But they had risen from the ash, stronger, cleaner, and more powerful than before. They were the architects of their own redemption.
