CHAPTER 5: THE BABY WHO SURVIVED

Three months later, the mansion looked different.

The staircase had been repaired.

The nursery was painted soft yellow.

And Elena stood by the window, holding her newborn daughter against her chest.

Adrian came in quietly.

“She’s asleep?” he asked.

Elena smiled. “Finally.”

He looked at the baby’s tiny face.

Then at Elena.

“I should have believed you sooner.”

Elena did not answer right away.

Outside, the garden moved gently in the afternoon wind.

“You believed the version of your family you wanted to be true,” she said. “That’s different from wanting to hurt me.”

Adrian lowered his head.

“I’m still sorry.”

Elena touched his hand.

“I know.”

Weeks later, Vanessa was charged with assault, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and attempted harm against an unborn child. Mrs. Howard gave a full statement. The recordings sealed everything.

At the trial, Vanessa cried again.

But this time, no one rushed to comfort her.

Elena sat in the front row with her daughter in her arms.

When the verdict was read, Adrian held Elena’s hand.

Guilty.

Vanessa screamed.

Elena simply closed her eyes.

For the first time in months, she felt no fear.

Only peace.

That night, back at the mansion, Elena stood at the top of the staircase.

The same place where Vanessa had tried to end everything.

Her baby made a soft sound in her arms.

Elena looked down at the landing.

Then she whispered, “We survived.”

And somewhere in the quiet house, the truth finally felt louder than every lie.
