Chapter 14: A New Dawn at the Estate

The long drive back to the countryside estate felt celebratory rather than weary. As Richard’s car turned onto the familiar gravel driveway, the grand yet welcoming facade of the house stood bathed in the warm, golden light of the late afternoon sun. The air was crisp and clear, carrying the scent of blooming wildflowers and freshly cut grass from the surrounding pastures.

When he stepped out of the vehicle, the front door opened immediately. Clara stood on the porch, wearing her signature blue dress and crisp white apron, her expression radiating a quiet, profound sense of peace. But it was the small figure darting out from behind her that brought a rush of absolute joy to Richard’s chest.

ā€œDaddy!ā€ Leo yelled, running full speed across the porch and down the steps.

Richard dropped his briefcase on the gravel and knelt down just in time to catch his son, swinging the five-year-old up into a tight, affectionate embrace. Leo buried his face in his father’s shoulder, laughing with uncontainable happiness. ā€œWe have kept him thoroughly occupied, Mr. Sterling,ā€ Clara said with a warm, gentle smile that reflected the deep bond they had forged during the crisis. ā€œThe countryside agrees with him. He hasn’t mentioned the city once.ā€

ā€œAnd we aren’t going back to the city for a long, long time, right Daddy?ā€ Leo asked, his brow furrowing slightly with childish concern.

Richard knelt back down, looking directly into his son’s eyes with absolute sincerity. ā€œThat’s right, buddy. We are going to live right here, where it’s safe, peaceful, and where we can be a real family. No more running, no more hiding, and no more being afraid.ā€

Leo beamed, satisfied with the promise, and immediately grabbed his father’s hand, pulling him eagerly toward the back gardens to show off his latest discoveries. Clara watched them go, her hands folded neatly over her
