Chapter 4: Confrontation on the Terrace

The night air was biting as Richard stepped through the French doors onto the sprawling stone terrace. The wind caught the lapels of his suit jacket, but he barely felt the cold. A few yards away, Eleanor stood near the balustrade, silhouetted against the pale moonlight. She was clutching her smartphone tightly in one hand, her other hand gesturing erratically at the empty garden below as she whispered venomous words into the receiver. The red one-shoulder gown billowed slightly in the midnight breeze, giving her the appearance of a tragic, fallen queen presiding over a crumbling kingdom.

Richard approached quietly, his footsteps muffled by the thick stone tiles. He did not announce his presence until he was standing just a few feet behind her.

ā€œWho are you talking to at two in the morning, Eleanor?ā€ his voice cut through the cool night air with terrifying calm.

Eleanor gasped, whirling around with the phone pressed frantically to her chest. Her face was pale, her carefully applied makeup slightly smudged around the eyes, revealing the raw, panicked exhaustion beneath the polished facade. For a split second, her defenses crumbled, but the familiar mask of haughty defiance quickly slammed back into place.

ā€œMy private affairs are no longer any of your concern, Richard,ā€ she snapped, her voice trembling slightly despite her best efforts to sound composed. ā€œYou have spent your entire life hiding behind spreadsheets and corporate ledgers, while I have had to maintain the social standing of this family single-handedly. You have no idea what it takes to survive in our world.ā€

ā€œSurvive?ā€ Richard echoed, stepping closer until the sheer force of his presence forced her back a step against the stone railing. ā€œYou haven’t been surviving, Eleanor. You’ve been liquidating our entire livelihood behind my back. The accounts are drained. Millions of dollars transferred to offshore holding accounts with no paper trail. I saw the records tonight. Who is on the other end of that phone? Is it the same person who called you while Leo was crying in the hallway?ā€

Eleanor’s eyes flashed with a dangerous mix of fear and malice. She lowered the smartphone slowly, her thumb hovering over the screen. ā€œYou think you are so brilliant, Richard. You think because you control the company, you control everything. But you don’t know half of what is coming. They aren’t just my accounts. They are our mutual obligations. If I go down, I am taking every single asset, every title, and every shred of your precious reputation down with me.ā€

May you like

ā€œThat is blackmail, Eleanor, and it won’t work,ā€ Richard said, his voice hardening into absolute steel. He stared down at her with a look of profound disappointment that cut deeper than any shout could have. ā€œYou have compromised our financial security, you have endangered our son’s emotional well-being, and you have brought criminals into our home. Our marriage ended the moment you decided to treat our family as collateral damage.ā€

Eleanor stared at him, the reality of his unwavering resolve finally sinking in. The threats that usually kept him compliant suddenly felt hollow against the cold wall of his indifference. She raised the phone once more, her knuckles white. ā€œYou will regret this, Richard. By morning, you won’t even have a home left to defend.ā€
