Chapter 6: The Uninvited Guest

The morning sun had fully risen, casting sharp, blinding beams through the tall, arched windows of the estateās formal dining room. Richard sat at the head of the long mahogany table, nursing a cup of black coffee while reviewing a fresh batch of printed bank statements. The silence was abruptly shattered by the sound of heavy footsteps echoing across the marble floor. Eleanor strode into the room, having discarded her evening gown for an austere, dark gray pantsuit, though her statement red earrings remained as a jarring symbol of her defiant personality.
She did not sit down. Instead, she paced behind the opposite end of the table, her eyes scanning Richard with an expression of predatory calculation.
āYou sent the boy away,ā she stated flatly, not bothering to frame it as a question.
Richard did not look up from his papers. āLeo is safe, where your reckless ambitions can no longer reach him or use him as leverage. You wasted your entire night making threats, Eleanor, but you failed to realize one crucial detail.ā
Eleanor paused, her hands gripping the back of a high-backed chair. āAnd what brilliant revelation have you unlocked in your little study all night, Richard? Another lawsuit? More empty corporate bluster?ā
āNo,ā Richard said calmly, finally lifting his gaze to meet hers. āI spent the night working with the forensic accounting team and federal investigators. The offshore transfers you authorized didnāt just drain our personal accounts; they crossed into corporate embezzlement territory. The moment those funds touched an unregulated foreign entity linked to known shell companies, federal jurisdiction was triggered.ā
For a fraction of a second, the color drained entirely from Eleanorās face. The cool, unshakable veneer she wore like armor cracked, revealing genuine panic beneath the surface. She recovered quickly, forcing a harsh, unnatural laugh. āYou are bluffing. You would never involve federal authorities. It would destroy the companyās stock value overnight. You care far too much about your precious public image to ever pull that trigger.ā
āI used to,ā Richard acknowledged, standing up slowly from his chair. He walked around the table toward her, his posture tall and unyielding. āI cared about maintaining appearances, about keeping the peace, about protecting a marriage that died years ago. But watching our five-year-old son crying in the hallway, clinging to a maid because he was terrified of the environment you created? That cured me of my vanity, Eleanor. The authorities were notified at 5:00 AM. By noon, the accounts will be frozen, and warrants will be issued for everyone involved in this embezzlement schemeāstarting with the associates whispering in your ear.ā
Before Eleanor could formulate a reply, the sharp, authoritative ring of the front doorbell echoed through the expansive foyer. It was not the polite, intermittent chime of a social visitor, but the steady, insistent peal of official business. Both of them froze, listening intently as the butler walked across the marble floor to answer the door.

Eleanorās chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow breaths. She looked at Richard with naked hatred, the mask completely gone now, leaving only a cornered, desperate woman. āYouāve ruined everything,ā she whispered hoarsely.
āIām just finishing what you started,ā Richard replied coldly as heavy footsteps approached the dining room threshold.
