Chapter 1: The Door at the Top of the Stairs

My heart hammered against my ribs as I took the grand staircase two steps at a time. The string quartet downstairs was already playing the prelude, but all I could hear was the frantic rushing of my own blood.
At the landing, Maria, our longtime maid, stood trembling. She didn’t say a word at first, her eyes wide with panic. She just threw her arm out, pointing a shaking finger directly at the heavy, closed oak doors of the master study.
"Sir," Maria choked out, her voice breaking. "She locked him inside."
Before I could even process the words, a flurry of white silk and lace stepped into my path. It was Vanessa, my bride-to-be. Her veil was pushed back, and her face was a mask of theatrical, frantic innocence. She threw her hands up defensively, blocking the doorknob.
"She is lying!" Vanessa shrilled, her eyes darting nervously. "I would never hurt him!"
I didn't argue. I didn't ask questions. I just shoved past the woman I was supposed to marry in ten minutes and grabbed the brass handle. It clicked—locked from the outside. I twisted the key that had been left in the keyhole and shoved the heavy doors open.
There, stepping out from the dim, dusty shadows of the study, was my seven-year-old son, Leo. He was wearing his miniature tuxedo, but it was crumpled. His small face was smeared with dust and flushed a deep, blotchy red from crying. He wrapped his little arms around his own chest, trembling like a leaf in a storm.
I dropped to my knees, the breath knocked out of me. "Leo? Buddy, what happened?"
Leo let out a heartbreaking sob. "She said I'd ruin the wedding."
The air in the hallway vanished. I slowly stood up and turned to Vanessa. Every ounce of love I thought I had for this woman evaporated, replaced by a cold, blinding rage. My jaw locked so hard my teeth ached.
"You locked my son away!" I roared, my voice echoing down the cavernous halls of the estate.

Before Vanessa could spin another lie, Leo looked up at me, tears streaming down his dirty cheeks. His next words shattered my heart into a million pieces.
"She said mommy's gone so I don't matter..."
