Chapter 9: The Sun After the Storm

One Year Later.
The backyard was bathed in the golden light of a late summer evening. The smell of barbecue filled the air, and the sound of children laughing echoed over the lawn.
I stood on the patio, flipping burgers, watching Leo chase our new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby, through the sprinklers. Leo was eight now. He was taller, louder, and his smile reached all the way to his bright eyes. The timid, terrified boy in the dusty tuxedo was a ghost of the past.
Maria walked out onto the deck, carrying a tray of lemonade, smiling warmly at the chaotic scene.
We had survived. The nightmare of that wedding day had burned our lives to the ground, but in the ashes, we found out what was truly important. It wasn't about filling a void or presenting a perfect picture to the world. It was about protecting each other.
Leo ran up to me, soaking wet, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist.
