Chapter 7: The Honeypot

I agreed to meet her at a high-end restaurant two days later to "finalize the transfer." What Vanessa didn't know was that I had spent the last 48 hours working with Vance and the local authorities. Extortion is a heavy felony, but we needed her to admit to the blackmail on tape, unprompted.

I sat at the corner table, a wire taped to my chest, a microscopic camera embedded in my tie clip.

When Vanessa arrived, she looked triumphant. She ordered champagne.

"I need assurances," I said, playing the part of the defeated victim. "If I give you this two million, you delete the fake photos? You leave Leo and me alone?"

"Of course," she laughed, taking a sip. "I don't care about you, and I certainly don't care about that whiny little brat of yours. I just wanted the lifestyle. You pay up, and the fake evidence disappears. If not, I ruin you both."
