Chapter 12: The Devil’s Sanctuary

They drove for hours, leaving the city’s glowing skyline far behind. The Bentley was abandoned at the pier; Marcus had a battered, unassuming sedan waiting in an alley. They arrived at a brutalist concrete structure hidden deep within the sprawling pine forests of the state’s northern ridge.

Inside, the safehouse was a maze of servers, weapon racks, and glaring fluorescent lights. Jane sat on a metal cot, wrapped in a coarse wool blanket, nursing a mug of black coffee. The adrenaline had returned, but it was different now—cold, calculating, and laced with absolute cynicism.

"Why save me, Marcus?" Jane asked, staring at her trembling hands. "The Vanguard put a bullet in your chest three years ago."

Marcus leaned against a steel column, field-stripping a sidearm. "They put a bullet in my lung. Barely survived. I’ve spent the last three years building a network to tear your father’s empire down to the studs. The Coalition, we call ourselves. But we hit a wall. We don't have the internal security codes to the Vanguard's central ledger."

Jane let out a dry, humorless laugh. "So, I’m not a rescue. I’m a skeleton key."

"You traded a domestic prison for a death sentence," Marcus said, his eyes narrowing. "I’m offering you a third option. Revenge. You help us crack the Vanguard, and you get to watch your father lose everything he loves. Including his power."

Jane closed her eyes. The faces of Arthur and Eleanor flashed behind her eyelids—collateral damage in her desperate bid for freedom. She was already a monster. Maybe it was time to put the monster to work.
