Chapter 22: The Master Switch

Jane knew the architectural layout of the Vanguard Tower better than anyone. Her father had forced her to memorize it when she was a teenager, grooming her for a throne she never wanted.
She knew that the ground floor garage connected to the central HVAC and power routing sub-station. If she could reach it, she could overload the backup generators. She couldn't escape, but she could turn the Vanguard Tower into a glass inferno.
She moved like a ghost, slipping between cars, leaving bloody handprints on the hoods of Mercedes and Audis. She reached the heavy utility door leading to the sub-station and picked the mechanical lock with trembling, blood-slicked fingers.
Inside, the roar of the massive generators masked the sound of her entry. It was a cavernous space filled with heavy machinery and high-voltage warnings.
Jane limped toward the main control console. She had to bypass the safeties. It would take time she didn't have.
Suddenly, the heavy metal door she had just come through slammed open.
