Chapter 9: The Crimson Ledger

At 8:05 PM, Jane sat in the Bentley, her knuckles white as she gripped the leather armrest. The deadline had passed. She waited for the confirmation photo from Silas, the proof that her tormentors were gone.
Instead, the phone rang. It was an audio call. She answered it.
"It's done," Silas’s voice came through, but it was ragged, breathless. The sound of sirens wailed faintly in the background.
"Is the team secure?" Jane asked.
"No. We were intercepted. Heavy hitters. We took heavy casualties, but we completed the objective in the crossfire. The old woman suffocated in the vault. The boy caught a stray bullet from the invading force before we could finish him. He bled out on the floor. Both are dead."
Jane closed her eyes. A massive, shuddering breath left her lungs. "And the invading force?"

"Your father's men," Silas coughed. "They saw us. They know it was a hit, not an extraction. They wiped out most of my guys, but we took down a few of theirs. The police are swarming the building now. It’s a massacre, Jane."
The line went dead. Jane dropped the phone. She had won. Eleanor could never belittle her again. Arthur could never turn a blind eye to her suffering again. The cage was broken. But she had waged war not just on her husband's family, but on her father's empire. By forcing his hand, and by killing the assets he wanted to preserve, she had signed her own death warrant.
