Chapter 2 – The Truth Hidden in Five Years

Mariana did not go home that night.

She drove straight to the children's hospital, where doctors carefully examined Mateo while he slept curled against her chest, refusing to let go of her jacket even in his dreams.

The pediatrician's face hardened as each injury was documented.

Old bruises.

Signs of malnutrition.

Severe emotional trauma.

Calluses around his neck exactly where the chain had rested.

"He didn't get this way overnight," the doctor said quietly. "Someone has been abusing this child for years."

Mariana closed her eyes.

Every month she had wired money.

Every month Ricardo had assured her that Mateo was healthy, happy, and attending a private school.

She had believed every photograph he sent.

Now she realized every picture had been taken years earlier.

The next morning her attorney, Sofia Delgado, arrived carrying three thick binders.

"We subpoenaed the financial records," Sofia said.

"What did you find?"

She slid photographs across the table.

Luxury vacations.

Designer purchases.

Casino receipts.

Luxury vehicle payments.

Every transfer Mariana had sent for Mateo had financed Ricardo's new life with Claudia.

Then came the security footage.

Neighbors had installed cameras years before.

The videos showed Mateo sleeping outside beside the doghouse.

Cleaning the pool.

Carrying heavy trash bags.

Being forced to eat leftovers after everyone else had finished dinner.

Meanwhile Claudia's son celebrated extravagant birthdays inside the same house.

Mariana couldn't speak.

Then Sofia opened the final binder.

"Ricardo didn't just steal your money."

"He forged your signature."

Property loans.

Insurance policies.

Business contracts.

Everything carried Mariana's falsified signature.

The district attorney immediately approved criminal fraud charges.

That afternoon, Ricardo received the first court order freezing every bank account in his name.
