Chapter 5: The Boy Beneath the Orange Tree

Seven years later...
The orange tree had grown taller than the roof.
Every spring, its branches filled with fragrant blossoms, and every summer, its fruit glowed like little suns against the green leaves.
For Mateo, the tree was never just a tree.
It was freedom.
Every birthday, Mariana measured his height against its trunk.
Every difficult day, they sat beneath its shade together.
One afternoon, a social worker arrived with a frightened eight-year-old boy named Samuel.
He hadn't spoken in nearly four months.
His foster placement had failed.
His eyes never left the ground.
When Mariana welcomed him into the foundation, Samuel refused to enter the building.
He simply stood beside the orange tree.
Mateo walked over without saying a word.
He sat in the grass.
After several quiet minutes, he patted the ground beside him.
Samuel slowly sat down.
Neither boy spoke.
They didn't need to.
Finally, Mateo whispered,
"You don't have to talk."
"I didn't either."
Samuel looked at him for the first time.
"They hurt you too?"
Mateo nodded.
"A long time ago."
Samuel glanced at the tree.
"Why do you always sit here?"
Mateo smiled gently.
"Because this tree watched me become brave."
That afternoon, for the very first time...
Samuel accepted a glass of juice.
Sometimes healing didn't begin with answers.

Sometimes...
It began with someone who understood silence.
