Chapter 3 – The House of Lies Falls Apart

Three days later police officers arrived at the mansion with investigators from Child Protective Services and the Financial Crimes Unit.
The neighborhood gathered outside.
No one looked away this time.
Ricardo tried smiling.
"This is all a misunderstanding."
An investigator placed photographs on the dining table.
Mateo chained beside the doghouse.
Bank transfers.
Forged signatures.
Medical reports.
The smile disappeared.
Claudia stared at Ricardo.
"You told me she abandoned him."
"I..."
"You said she never sent money."
"I can explain."
"No," Claudia whispered.
"You used my son too."
She picked up her baby and walked out without looking back.
Doña Elvira exploded.
"You're destroying this family!"
Mariana answered calmly.
"No."
"You destroyed it the day you called my son an animal."
Police officers escorted Ricardo outside in handcuffs.
As neighbors watched, he desperately called after Mariana.
"Please!"
"I made mistakes!"
"I can fix this!"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"You had five years."
"You spent every one of them hurting our son."
The patrol car door closed.
Ricardo lowered his head.
Doña Elvira suddenly tried grabbing Mateo.
"My grandson belongs with me!"
Mateo hid behind Mariana.
For the first time...
He spoke clearly.
"I don't want Grandma."
"I want Mom."
Silence covered the entire street.

Doña Elvira broke into tears.
But no one stepped forward to comfort her.
