Chapter 4 – Home Again

Eight months later, the courtroom was full.

Ricardo pleaded guilty to child abuse, fraud, forgery, and financial exploitation.

He received a lengthy prison sentence.

Doña Elvira was convicted for child neglect and abuse and was permanently prohibited from having custody of any minor.

The mansion, the family business, and every asset obtained through fraud were returned to Mariana.

She sold the mansion.

"It has too many bad memories," she told Mateo.

Instead, they bought a modest house with a large garden.

The first thing Mateo asked for was not a television.

Not toys.

Not video games.

"A tree," he whispered.

"A tree where no one can tie me."

Together they planted an orange tree in the backyard.

Months of therapy slowly helped Mateo heal.

At first he slept with the bedroom light on.

Then he stopped hiding food under his pillow.

Later he began laughing again.

One evening, nearly a year after Mariana's return, they sat beneath the growing orange tree.

Mateo rested his head on her shoulder.

"Mom?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"I remembered something."

"What is it?"

"I always knew you'd come back."

Mariana's eyes filled with tears.

"Even when everyone said you were gone forever?"

He nodded.

"I talked to the stars every night."

"I told them to help you find me."

Mariana hugged him tightly.

"I'll never leave you again."

Years later, when the orange tree bore its first fruit, Mateo helped other abused children through a foundation his mother established using the money recovered from Ricardo's fraud.

At the entrance stood a simple bronze plaque:

"No child should ever have to earn love. Home is where they are protected, believed, and cherished."

And every spring, beneath the shade of that orange tree, mother and son celebrated not the years they had lost—

The End.
