Chapter 2 – The Secret That Would Ruin Everything (Part 1)

The heavy wooden doors of San Miguel Church closed behind Valeria with a deep, hollow thud.

For a brief moment, the world outside felt strangely quiet.

The afternoon sun warmed her face, but she barely noticed. Guests were beginning to spill out of the church, whispering in small groups. Some stared openly at the torn lace on her back. Others avoided looking at her altogether, embarrassed to have witnessed something so intimate.

Valeria took a slow breath.

She had expected to feel broken.

Instead, she felt empty.

Ten years.

Ten years of trying to become the woman Mauricio wanted.

Ten years of believing that if she worked harder, smiled softer, argued less, sacrificed more... one day he would love her the way she loved him.

Now she realized something terrifying.

He never had.

Behind her, Elena caught up, slightly out of breath.

"My daughter..."

Valeria turned.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Elena wrapped both arms around her.

"I'm sorry."

Valeria blinked.

"What for?"

"For every time I asked you to stay."

The words landed harder than anything Mauricio had said that day.

Elena's voice trembled.

"When you came home crying after he criticized your business... I told you relationships were difficult."

She swallowed.

"When he convinced you to stop traveling because it 'didn't look appropriate for a future wife'... I told you compromise was part of love."

Another tear rolled down her face.

"When he made you apologize for things that weren't your fault..."

She closed her eyes.

"I asked you to apologize."

Valeria hugged her mother tighter.

"You didn't know."

"No."

Elena shook her head.

"I refused to know."

Across the church courtyard, Mauricio stormed outside.

His face had lost every trace of composure.

He searched frantically until he spotted Valeria.

"There you are."

He marched toward her.

Several guests immediately turned to watch.

Alejandro Salazar stepped forward instinctively, but Valeria raised one hand.

She wanted to handle this herself.

Mauricio stopped only a few feet away.

"What exactly do you think you've accomplished?"

Valeria looked at him calmly.

"I told the truth."

"You humiliated me."

"No."

Her voice remained steady.

"You humiliated yourself."

His nostrils flared.

"You think people are on your side?"

She didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

Mauricio looked around.

Groups of guests immediately looked away when their eyes met his.

Others didn't.

Some stared at him with open disappointment.

One of his business partners quietly walked toward his car without saying goodbye.

Another shook his head before leaving.

The damage had already begun.

His phone buzzed.

Mauricio ignored it.

It buzzed again.

Then again.

Finally, irritated, he glanced at the screen.

Carlos Mendoza.

Chief Financial Officer.

He answered sharply.

"What?"

Carlos sounded panicked.

"Where are you?"

"You know exactly where I am."

"You need to come to the office."

"I'm getting married."

"No..."

A long pause.

"I don't think you are."

Mauricio frowned.

"What happened?"

"The tax investigators are here."

His blood froze.

"What?"

"They arrived twenty minutes ago."

Impossible.

"They have warrants."

Another silence.

"They're asking for accounting records."

Mauricio's stomach tightened.

"Who authorized this?"

"I don't know."

"They specifically requested documents from the last four years."

Mauricio slowly looked toward Valeria.

For a split second...

He wondered.

Had she done this?

No.

She couldn't.

She knew nothing about the company's finances.

Or so he believed.

Meanwhile, Valeria's own phone vibrated inside her purse.

Unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Instead, she answered.

"Hello?"

"Is this Ms. Valeria Torres?"

"Yes."

"My name is Adriana López."

The woman hesitated.

"I'm an attorney."

Valeria frowned.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?"

"No."

"But I represent someone who desperately needs to speak with you."

Valeria glanced toward Mauricio, who was now arguing loudly on his own phone.

"About what?"

"It's regarding Mauricio Herrera."

Her heartbeat slowed.

"What about him?"

Another pause.

"My client has been trying to contact you for almost two years."

Valeria felt a chill.

"Who is your client?"

The lawyer answered quietly.

"His former wife."

Everything around Valeria seemed to stop.

Former...

What?

She frowned.

"There must be some mistake."

"There isn't."

"Mauricio has never been married."

"I'm afraid that's what he wanted you to believe."

Valeria couldn't breathe.

"What are you saying?"

"He married my client twelve years ago."

The words echoed inside her mind.

Impossible.

She had met Mauricio ten years ago.

He had told her she was the first woman he had ever seriously loved.

He had sworn he had never proposed to anyone.

Never.

The lawyer continued.

"They separated after eighteen months."

Valeria whispered,

"Why?"

A long silence followed.

Then came the answer.

"Because she accused him of psychological abuse."

Valeria closed her eyes.

The church disappeared.

The guests disappeared.

Even Mauricio's shouting faded into the background.

One sentence repeated over and over inside her head.

She wasn't the first.

Across the courtyard, Mauricio ended his call.

The tax investigation was bad.

Very bad.

But something about Valeria's face worried him even more.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't angry.

She looked...

Curious.

Confused.

Dangerously calm.

He walked toward her again.

"What now?"

Valeria slowly lowered her phone.

She studied him as though seeing him for the first time.

"I have a question."

He forced a smile.

"What?"

"Were you ever married before?"

For the first time that day...

Mauricio completely lost his composure.

His face turned white.

"What?"

"You heard me."

He laughed awkwardly.

"Who told you something that ridiculous?"

Valeria watched him carefully.

He hadn't answered.

"I asked a simple question."

His jaw tightened.

"It's none of your business."

She almost smiled.

"Interesting."

"What is?"

"Five minutes ago, I was supposed to become your wife."

She took one slow step closer.

"And now you're telling me your past isn't my business?"

Mauricio looked around nervously.

People were still watching.

Always watching.

He lowered his voice.

"We'll discuss this privately."

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

She held up her phone.

"I've just spoken to someone who says your ex-wife has been trying to warn me for two years."

His pupils widened.

Just for an instant.

But Valeria saw it.

That tiny flicker of fear.

It told her everything.

Mauricio wasn't shocked by the accusation.

May you like

He was terrified that the truth had finally caught up with him.
