Chapter 2 – The Secret That Would Ruin Everything (Part 5)

Mauricio read the first page again.
Then a third time.
The words refused to change.
Civil Action for Fraud, Defamation, Coercive Conduct, and Intentional Interference with Business Relationships.
Five plaintiffs.
Five separate stories.
One defendant.
His hands began to shake.
"This is absurd."
No one answered.
Daniel Ortega, the process server, simply waited.
"I've completed my instructions, Mr. Herrera."
He handed Mauricio one final document.
"You are required to respond within the time established by the court."
Without another word, Daniel turned and walked away.
The silence he left behind was heavier than before.
Valeria slowly extended her hand.
"May I see it?"
Mauricio instinctively pulled the documents closer to his chest.
"No."
It was the first time all afternoon that fear was unmistakable in his voice.
"You've seen enough."
Valeria looked at him steadily.
"I don't think I have."
Alejandro stepped forward.
"Mauricio."
He looked up.
"You once told me that transparency is the foundation of leadership."
Mauricio swallowed.
"I remember."
Alejandro nodded toward the papers.
"Then be transparent."
For several seconds, Mauricio didn't move.
Finally, he handed the documents to Valeria.
Not because he wanted to.
Because he realized refusing would only make him appear guiltier.
Valeria accepted them carefully.
She read the opening summary.
Each plaintiff accused Mauricio of a different form of manipulation.
But one sentence appeared in every statement.
The defendant deliberately used deception and abuse of authority to control the professional and personal decisions of others.
Her chest tightened.
The stories were different.
The pattern was the same.
She turned to Claudia.
"Why didn't you sue him years ago?"
Claudia answered honestly.
"Because I thought no one would believe me."
She smiled sadly.
"He was charming."
Several guests lowered their eyes.
They remembered.
Mauricio had always been charming.
At charity dinners.
Business conferences.
Family gatherings.
He remembered birthdays.
Opened doors.
Made generous donations.
He knew exactly how to appear kind.
Only the people closest to him had seen another version.
Adriana added quietly,
"People who abuse emotional trust rarely behave the same way in public."
Valeria nodded slowly.
For years she had questioned herself.
Maybe she was too sensitive.
Maybe she misunderstood.
Maybe every couple fought this way.
Now, standing beside another woman who had lived through nearly the same experience, she realized something profound.
She had never been imagining it.
Mauricio suddenly laughed.
The sound startled everyone.
At first it was quiet.
Then louder.
Almost desperate.
"You've all created a wonderful story."
No one interrupted.
He looked around the courtyard.
"So this is what happens?"
He pointed toward Claudia.
"My bitter ex-wife."
Toward Adriana.
"A lawyer chasing publicity."
Toward Alejandro.
"A businessman protecting his reputation."
Finally...
He pointed at Valeria.
"And a woman who can't accept that relationships require compromise."
Valeria met his gaze.
"You still don't understand."
"Oh?"
"You think today is about the dress."
He frowned.
"It isn't."
She took one slow step closer.
"It's about every apology you demanded."
Another step.
"Every decision you made for me."
Another.
"Every opportunity you stole."
She stopped only a few feet away.
"And the fact that you still believe you were helping me."
For the first time all afternoon...
Mauricio had no answer.
His phone rang again.
Carlos.
He almost ignored it.
Instead, he answered.
"What?"
Carlos sounded defeated.
"It's over."
Mauricio closed his eyes.
"What now?"
"The investigators froze the company's primary accounts."
Silence.
"They're interviewing department managers."
Another pause.
"And..."
"What?"
"People are talking."
"What are they saying?"
Carlos hesitated.
"They're saying this wasn't the first complaint."
Mauricio slowly lowered the phone.
Alejandro overheard enough.
He sighed.
"I was afraid of that."
Mauricio looked at him.
"You don't know anything."
"I know more than you think."
The older businessman removed a small notebook from inside his jacket.
"I've kept records."
Mauricio frowned.
"Records?"
"Every senior employee who resigned unexpectedly."
He flipped through several pages.
"At the time, I believed it was coincidence."
Another page.
"Then I noticed something."
He looked directly at Mauricio.
"They all resigned after disagreeing with you."
Several former employees standing among the guests exchanged uneasy glances.
One man finally spoke.
"I wasn't fired."
Everyone looked toward him.
"I resigned."
Mauricio's head snapped in his direction.
The man introduced himself.
"My name is Sergio."
He had once been the company's logistics director.
"You told everyone I left because I couldn't handle pressure."
He smiled bitterly.
"The truth?"
He rolled up his sleeve.
A long scar stretched across his forearm.
"I collapsed from exhaustion after working twenty-one consecutive days."
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Sergio continued.
"When I asked for medical leave..."
He looked at Mauricio.
"You told me leaders don't get tired."
Another voice emerged.
"I remember."
A woman stepped forward.
She introduced herself as Lucía.
Former Human Resources manager.
"You personally instructed me never to record mental health complaints."
Mauricio interrupted sharply.
"That's a lie."
She calmly removed a flash drive from her purse.
"I made copies."
The courtyard became silent once again.
Adriana looked toward Valeria.
"This is growing beyond our lawsuit."
Valeria nodded.
She understood.
What had begun as a broken wedding was becoming something much larger.
Years of silence were ending.
One person after another was finding the courage to speak.
Claudia gently touched Valeria's arm.
"I know today feels like your life ended."
Valeria looked at her.
"It doesn't."
Claudia smiled.
"It feels that way."
She glanced back at the church.
"But sometimes the worst day of your life is only the day the truth finally arrives."
At that exact moment, a television news van pulled into the parking lot.
Someone had called the media.
Within seconds, two reporters stepped out carrying cameras.
They had heard rumors of a wedding scandal.
They expected gossip.
Instead...
They found a growing crowd surrounding one of the city's most respected businessmen, while former employees, investors, and his ex-wife stood together with documents in their hands.
One of the reporters quietly whispered to her cameraman,
"This isn't a wedding story."
He adjusted the camera lens.
"No."
He focused on Mauricio.
"This is the beginning of an investigation."
Across the courtyard, Mauricio looked up just as the red recording light switched on.
For the first time in his carefully constructed life, there was no private room left to hide in.
And Valeria realized that walking into the church wearing a torn dress had not ruined her future.
May you like
It had exposed a lie that had survived for more than a decade.
