Chapter 3 – Ashes of an Empire (Part 1)

The flashing red lights from the television cameras reflected across the polished stone steps of San Miguel Church.
Mauricio Herrera had spent fifteen years building a reputation that seemed untouchable.
In less than an hour...
It had begun to collapse.
The reporters did not shout questions.
They simply watched.
Sometimes silence frightened powerful people far more than accusations.
Mauricio knew that.
He had used silence against countless employees, business rivals, and even the women he claimed to love.
Today...
Silence had turned against him.
One reporter finally stepped forward.
"Mr. Herrera."
Mauricio looked up.
"Would you like to comment on the allegations made today by your former wife and several former employees?"
"No."
"Were you aware that multiple civil claims have been filed against you?"
"Did you interfere with Ms. Valeria Torres's professional career?"
Mauricio walked toward his car.
The cameras followed.
The reporter continued.
"Did you send emails to prospective employers describing Ms. Torres as emotionally unstable?"
Mauricio stopped.
His hand tightened around the car door.
Without turning around, he answered,
"I was trying to protect someone I loved."
Valeria heard every word.
For years, that sentence had sounded comforting.
Now it sounded like a confession.
Across the courtyard, Claudia quietly approached Valeria.
"May I ask you something?"
Valeria nodded.
"When was the last time you made a major life decision without asking his opinion first?"
The question caught her off guard.
She searched her memory.
Buying an apartment?
Mauricio had chosen the neighborhood.
Starting her consulting company?
Mauricio had insisted she keep it small.
Hiring employees?
He had interviewed them himself.
Vacations?
Friends?
Even the color of the living room walls...
She couldn't remember the last decision that had belonged entirely to her.
A lump formed in her throat.
"I... don't know."
Claudia gave a gentle, understanding smile.
"I couldn't remember either."
Elena listened quietly.
Each answer from her daughter felt like another stone settling on her heart.
She had watched all of it happen.
She simply hadn't recognized it for what it was.
Control rarely arrived as violence.
Sometimes...
It arrived disguised as concern.
A black sedan suddenly entered the church parking lot at high speed.
The tires screeched.
Several guests stepped back instinctively.
The vehicle stopped beside Mauricio's car.
A man in his late sixties stepped out.
Silver hair.
Impeccable navy suit.
Sharp eyes filled with disappointment.
Everyone recognized him.
Ricardo Herrera.
Mauricio's father.
He had flown back from Monterrey the moment he saw the news alerts spreading across social media.
He looked first at the cameras.
Then at the crowd.
Finally...
At his son.
"Mauricio."
His voice was calm.
"We're leaving."
Mauricio immediately nodded.
"Finally."
He reached for the passenger door.
Ricardo didn't move.
"I didn't say together."
Mauricio frowned.
"What?"
"I'm here as Chairman of Herrera Holdings."
Silence.
"Not as your father."
Even the reporters stopped writing.
Ricardo slowly removed a folded document from his briefcase.
"In accordance with Article Twelve of the company's bylaws..."
He looked directly into his son's eyes.
"...you are suspended as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately."
Mauricio laughed.
"You can't do that."
"The Board already has."
"When?"
"Twenty-three minutes ago."
Alejandro quietly stepped forward.
"I voted in favor."
Another investor nodded.
"So did I."
One after another...
Hands rose.
Every board member present had already approved the emergency motion.
Mauricio stared at them in disbelief.
"You planned this."
Ricardo answered honestly.
"No."
He looked toward Valeria.
"You did."
Valeria frowned.
"I didn't."
Ricardo shook his head.
"You chose to tell the truth."
He glanced at the cameras.
"The truth did the rest."
Mauricio felt the world spinning.
His company.
Gone.
His wedding.
Gone.
His reputation...
Disappearing with every passing minute.
He looked toward his father.
"You taught me to be strong."
Ricardo's expression softened with regret.
"I taught you to lead."
A long silence followed.
"You confused leadership with control."
For the first time that day...
Mauricio lowered his head.
No excuses.
No anger.
Only exhaustion.
He suddenly looked older.
Not because of age.
Because every lie required energy to maintain.
And the weight of those lies had finally become too heavy to carry.
Meanwhile, one of the reporters approached Valeria.
"Ms. Torres."
She turned.
"What happens now?"
Valeria looked down at the torn wedding dress.
A few loose threads still hung from the ripped lace.
She gently touched them.
Then smiled.
"I'm going home."
The reporter looked surprised.
"That's all?"
She nodded.
"For today."
That evening, as the sun disappeared behind the mountains, Valeria stood alone on the balcony of her apartment.
The city lights shimmered below.
Her phone rang.
It was Eduardo Ramos.
The CEO whose company had rejected her years earlier.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
"Valeria..."
His voice carried genuine remorse.
"I owe you an apology."
She closed her eyes.
"You've already apologized."
"Not enough."
He took a breath.
"I didn't know Mauricio had lied."
"I know."
"I only learned the truth six months ago."
Valeria frowned.
"What changed?"
"We hired a compliance auditor."
He paused.
"They found copies of his emails buried in our archives."
Another silence.
"I've been looking for you ever since."
Valeria leaned against the balcony railing.
"What for?"
Eduardo smiled softly on the other end of the line.
"To offer you the position you should have had three years ago."
Valeria looked out across the city.
For the first time in a decade...
The future wasn't something Mauricio had planned.
May you like
It was something she could choose for herself.
(To be continued in the final part of Chapter 3, where Mauricio faces the legal consequences, Valeria rebuilds her life, and the story reaches its conclusion.)
