Chapter 2 – The Secret That Would Ruin Everything (Part 2)

Mauricio stared at Valeria as though the ground beneath him had vanished.
For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.
The courtyard buzzed with quiet conversations, but to Mauricio, every sound seemed distant.
There was only one thought pounding inside his head.
How did she find out?
He had spent years making sure the past stayed buried.
The divorce records had been sealed during a confidential settlement.
He had changed law firms.
Moved cities.
Built a new reputation.
When he met Valeria, no one in her circle knew anything about his previous marriage.
That had been the entire point.
Now, somehow...
The past had found its way back.
"Mauricio."
Valeria's voice broke the silence.
"I'm waiting."
He forced himself to breathe.
"You're listening to strangers."
She folded her arms.
"Then tell me they're lying."
"They're exaggerating."
"I didn't ask that."
Another pause.
"Were you married?"
His eyes shifted away for the briefest moment.
That was enough.
"You were."
"It was a mistake."
Valeria let out a bitter laugh.
"A mistake?"
"I was young."
"You were thirty-two."
His head snapped up.
"How do you know that?"
"The attorney told me."
His face darkened.
"So you've already decided to believe her."
"No."
Valeria's expression remained calm.
"I'm deciding whether to believe you."
Across the courtyard, Alejandro Salazar quietly observed the exchange.
His assistant stepped beside him.
"Should we intervene?"
Alejandro shook his head.
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because this conversation has been waiting ten years to happen."
Mauricio stepped closer.
"Listen to me carefully."
Valeria didn't move.
"My first marriage ended because she was unstable."
There it was.
The explanation.
Simple.
Convenient.
Familiar.
Valeria felt an uncomfortable sensation in her chest.
She had heard those words before.
Not about a wife.
About everyone else.
"Your business partner is unstable."
"Your cousin is jealous."
"Your friend manipulates you."
"Your father overreacts."
Every person who disagreed with Mauricio somehow became the problem.
Now...
Apparently his ex-wife had been "unstable" too.
"What was her name?"
Mauricio hesitated.
"It doesn't matter."
"It matters to me."
He sighed dramatically.
"Claudia."
Valeria repeated it quietly.
"Claudia."
A real name.
A real woman.
Not a rumor.
Not an invention.
Someone whose place she had unknowingly taken.
Her phone vibrated again.
A text message.
Unknown number.
This is Claudia. Adriana gave me your number. I never wanted to interfere in your life, but after what happened today, I think you deserve the truth.
Attached beneath the message...
A photograph.
Valeria opened it.
Her hands immediately began to shake.
It was a wedding picture.
A younger Mauricio stood in a charcoal-gray suit.
Beside him smiled a beautiful woman with dark hair.
She wore a simple ivory dress.
Around them...
The same church.
The same altar.
The same stained-glass windows.
San Miguel Parish.
Valeria stared at the image.
He hadn't simply hidden a marriage.
He had brought her to marry in the exact same church.
"Mauricio."
Her voice became almost a whisper.
"You brought me here..."
He didn't answer.
"You stood at the same altar."
Silence.
"You promised another woman forever in this church."
Guests nearby had stopped pretending not to listen.
A few slowly edged closer.
No one interrupted.
Elena stepped beside her daughter.
"What happened?"
Without speaking, Valeria handed her the phone.
Elena looked down.
Her face drained of color.
"My God..."
She zoomed in.
The date printed beneath the photograph read:
May 14, 2014.
Twelve years earlier.
She looked at Mauricio.
"You lied to all of us."
Teresa hurried over.
"What photograph?"
No one answered.
She reached for the phone.
When she saw it...
She closed her eyes.
Just for a second.
That tiny reaction told Valeria everything.
"You knew."
Teresa looked up slowly.
"Valeria..."
"You knew."
"It wasn't my place—"
"You knew."
Tears welled in Teresa's eyes.
"I begged him not to choose this church."
Mauricio spun toward his mother.
"Enough."
She ignored him.
"I told him people would remember."
"Mamá."
"I told him it was disrespectful."
"Mamá!"
"But he said no one would ever find out."
Silence spread through the courtyard.
Valeria felt something inside her finally settle.
The doubt was gone.
She no longer wondered whether Mauricio had lied.
Now she understood how many people had helped him keep those lies alive.
A black SUV rolled into the church parking lot.
It stopped several yards away.
The engine shut off.
No one paid much attention.
Until a woman stepped out.
She was elegant but plainly dressed, wearing a navy-blue blazer over a white blouse. Her posture was composed, yet there was visible hesitation in every step she took.
Adriana López, the attorney.
She walked around the vehicle and opened the rear passenger door.
Another woman emerged slowly.
She looked to be in her early forties.
Her dark hair was pulled back neatly.
There was no dramatic expression on her face.
Only quiet resolve.
Valeria recognized her immediately.
The woman from the wedding photograph.
Claudia.
The courtyard fell silent once again.
Mauricio's face turned ghostly pale.
"No..."
His voice cracked.
"No, no, no..."
Claudia stopped several feet away.
She looked first at Valeria.
Then at the torn wedding dress.
Her eyes softened with unmistakable sadness.
Finally, she turned toward Mauricio.
"You did it again."
The words were barely louder than a whisper.
Yet they struck harder than any accusation shouted across the courtyard.
Mauricio took a step backward.
"You shouldn't be here."
Claudia met his gaze steadily.
"I said the same thing twelve years ago."
She glanced toward the church.
"When I begged you not to destroy what was left of our marriage."
Valeria looked from Claudia to Mauricio, sensing that the story she had believed for ten years was only the surface.
And as Claudia slowly reached into her handbag and withdrew a thick, weathered envelope tied with a faded blue ribbon, she said quietly,
"I brought every letter I wrote after I left... letters he made sure no one ever received."
Valeria's breath caught.
May you like
If those letters contained the truth, then Mauricio's carefully constructed life was about to collapse piece by piece.
