Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail of Betrayal

The study was bathed in the warm, filtered light of the mid-morning sun. Diego bypassed his massive mahogany desk and walked over to the seating area by the fireplace. He gestured for Marisol to sit on the plush velvet sofa. She sat on the very edge, keeping Valentina on her lap.

Diego remained standing, pacing the floor as his mind worked through the timeline. "Four years ago," he began, more to himself than to her. "When my father fell ill and the board pressured me to take over the presidency... that was when you stopped answering my calls."

"I didn't stop answering," Marisol countered, her voice tight. "My phone was stolen, and when I went to your office to give you my new number, I was told you were in Europe. When I returned a month later, pregnant and terrified, your father’s personal lawyer met me in the lobby. He gave me an envelope with cash and told me that if I ever tried to contact you again, they would make sure my family in Veracruz lost their land."

Diego stopped pacing. His face went pale, the color draining from his lips. "An envelope? My father's lawyer, Mendoza?"

"Yes. I didn't take the money, Diego. I threw it on the floor and ran. But I knew then that there was no place for me in your life. I was just a distraction to your family’s legacy." She looked down at Valentina’s dark curls. "I took a job in another part of the country, but when my aunt passed away, I had to come back. I was desperate for work. A housekeeping agency sent me here. I didn't know this was your house until I signed the contract and walked through the gates. By then, I couldn't leave. I needed the insurance for her."

Diego sank into the armchair opposite them, looking suddenly older, the weight of his family’s manipulation settling squarely on his shoulders. His father had died two years ago, leaving behind a legacy of absolute control. Diego had believed he was carrying on a proud family tradition, but now he realized his entire path had been cleared by blackmail and cruelty.

"I didn't know," Diego whispered, covering his face with his hands. "I swear to you, Marisol. I thought you had left because you didn't want this life. I thought you hated the pressure of my family."

"I didn't hate you," she said softly, the old tenderness briefly flickering in her chest before she extinguished it. "But that doesn't change where we are now. Paulina wants us out. And honestly, Diego, I think it’s best if we leave. This house... it’s not safe for Valentina’s heart."

Diego lifted his head, his eyes burning with sudden intensity. "No. You are not leaving. Especially not because of Paulina." He stood up, walking over to his desk, and picked up the landline. He dialed a short extension. "Tomas? Come to my study. Bring the car keys, and call our family notary, Dr. Silva. Tell him it’s an emergency."

Marisol stood up, holding Valentina closer. "Diego, what are you doing?"

"I am undoing four years of lies," he said.
