Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

When Diego returned to the mansion that evening, the tension that had hung over the house for years seemed to have vanished.
He found Marisol in the garden. Valentina was running through the manicured grass, chasing a yellow butterfly, her laughter echoing through the open courtyard. For the first time, she wasn't hiding in the kitchen. She was wearing a colorful new dress that Tomas had been sent to buy earlier that afternoon, and her small face was bright with joy.
Marisol was sitting on a stone bench, watching her. When she saw Diego approach, she stood up, her expression guarded but softer than before.
"How did the meeting go?" she asked.
"The board knows the truth," Diego said, stopping a few feet from her. "The Al-Maktoum group is on board. The company is secure, and more importantly, Valentina’s future is legally protected. She is officially my daughter."
Marisol looked out at Valentina. "You did all of this in twenty-four hours."
"I wasted four years, Marisol. I had to move fast." Diego stepped closer, his voice dropping to a gentle whisper. "I know you don't trust me yet. I know I have a lot of things to prove to you. But I want us to be a family. Not just for her, but because I never stopped thinking about you. Even when I was with Paulina, even when I was trying to build this empire... it all felt empty because you weren't there."
Marisol felt a tear slip down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly. "Diego, we are from two different worlds now. I’ve spent years cleaning floors to buy her milk. You live in a palace."
"Then we will leave the palace," Diego said without hesitation. "We can buy a house in Valle de Bravo, away from the city, away from the press. We can build a home where Valentina can run outside without guards watching her every move. I don't need this mansion. I just need you."
Marisol looked into his eyes and saw the young man she had fell in love with years ago—the one who used to share cheap street tacos with her in the park, before the weight of his family's name changed him. He was still there.

"One step at a time, Diego," she said, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through her exhaustion.
"One step at a time," he agreed.
