The kitchen went silent after Mason pressed Enter.
Not quiet.

Patricia stood near the couch, one hand pressed to her reddened cheek, staring at her son like he had become a stranger in his own home.

Patricia finally found her voice.

Mason’s eyes were cold.
“I already did.”
Brianna crawled toward him.
“Mason, please. You’re angry. You don’t understand what she did.”
Mason slowly turned.
“What Lena did?”
His voice was low.
Dangerously calm.
“She carried my sick son through a fever while you sat on my couch laughing.”

Patricia lifted her chin.
“She needed discipline. That woman made you weak.”
Mason stepped closer.
“No, Mom.”
He looked down at Lena, then at Oliver.
“She made me a husband. She made me a father.”
Patricia’s face hardened.
“And what am I?”
Mason’s answer shattered her pride.
“A woman I should have stopped years ago.”
Then he picked up his phone.
“Security. Escort my mother and sister out.”
Patricia froze.
“You’re throwing me out?”
Mason looked at the feverish child in his arms.
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“I’m protecting my family.”
