Chapter 6: The House Learns to Breathe Again

The mansion changed slowly.

Not overnight.

At first, Oliver still asked permission before eating.

Lena still flinched when a door opened too quickly.

Mason still woke at 3 a.m., checking Oliver’s temperature even when there was no fever.

Healing did not arrive like a miracle.

It arrived in small moments.

Oliver laughing at breakfast.

Lena sleeping through the night.

Mason turning off his phone during dinner.

One afternoon, Mason carried Patricia’s portrait down from the grand staircase wall.

Lena watched from below.

“You don’t have to erase her.”

Mason looked at the portrait.

“I’m not erasing her.”

He carried it toward storage.

“I’m removing the altar.”

In its place, he hung a framed drawing Oliver had made.

Three stick figures holding hands.

Daddy.

Mommy.

Me.

And beside them, a tiny brown stuffed bear.

Lena cried when she saw it.

Oliver tugged her sleeve.

“Mommy, happy tears?”

She nodded.

“Yes, baby. Happy tears.”

That night, Mason sat beside Lena on the kitchen floor—the same place where she had collapsed weeks earlier.

He took her hand.

“I don’t deserve easy forgiveness.”

Lena looked at him.

“No. You don’t.”

Mason accepted it.

“But I want to earn a life where you feel safe with me again.”

Lena was quiet for a long time.

Then she leaned her head against his shoulder.

“Start by never letting anyone stand between us again.”

Mason kissed her hand.

“Never again.”

For the first time in years, the kitchen did not feel like a battlefield.

It felt like home.
