CHAPTER 14 — Isabella's Last Truth

# CHAPTER 14 — Isabella's Last Truth

The reunion changed everything.

Not overnight.

Not perfectly.

But permanently.

For the first time in twenty-seven years...

Sofia no longer wondered where she came from.

She knew.

She knew her mother's courage.

She knew her father's love.

And she knew that neither of them had abandoned her.

They had both sacrificed everything to save her.

---

A week later...

Marco called Alexander early in the morning.

"I found something."

His voice sounded different.

Uneasy.

Alexander immediately drove to the workshop.

Sofia came with him.

Marco was waiting beside an old cedar chest in the attic.

Dust covered the lid.

"I couldn't open it before."

He smiled sadly.

"It belonged to Isabella."

---

Inside...

They found old baby clothes.

Hospital bracelets.

Family photographs.

A wedding album.

Then...

Hidden beneath a false wooden panel...

There was another envelope.

This one was addressed differently.

Not to Sofia.

Not to Marco.

Simply:

If They Ever Find Us...

Alexander carefully unfolded the papers.

His eyes widened.

"This isn't a letter."

It was a diary.

---

The first page read:

"If you're reading this, then someone finally survived long enough to learn the truth."

"There is something even the Council doesn't know."

Sofia felt her heartbeat quicken.

"What does she mean?"

Marco slowly sat down.

His hands had begun to shake.

---

Alexander turned the page.

"The Council believes they control every inheritance."

"They believe they own every family connected to them."

"But before I escaped..."

"I copied something."

Everyone looked at one another.

"A ledger?" Evelyn asked.

Alexander shook his head.

"Worse."

---

He continued reading.

"The Founder's Charter."

Marco suddenly stood.

"No..."

Alexander looked up.

"You know what that is?"

Marco nodded slowly.

"My grandfather once mentioned it."

"He said every Council member swore an oath to protect it."

"What is it?"

Marco answered quietly.

"The original document that legally created the Council."

---

Silence filled the attic.

Alexander frowned.

"Why would Isabella steal it?"

Marco smiled sadly.

"Because without it..."

"...the Council legally never existed."

---

Sofia looked confused.

"But the Council is gone."

Marco nodded.

"Most of it."

"But not all."

---

Alexander understood immediately.

"There are survivors."

Marco's silence confirmed it.

---

The diary continued.

"I couldn't destroy the Charter."

"Too many innocent families still depended on the businesses connected to it."

"So I hid it somewhere no one would ever think to search."

Sofia whispered,

"Where?"

Alexander turned the page.

Then stopped.

The final sentence had been underlined twice.

"Inside the one place Carmen would never willingly enter..."

---

Nothing else.

The next page had been torn out.

Marco searched frantically through the box.

"It's missing."

Alexander examined the binding carefully.

"No."

He frowned.

"It wasn't torn."

"It was removed."

Years ago.

Deliberately.

---

That evening...

The four of them gathered around the dining table.

Maps.

Old photographs.

Property records.

Family documents.

Everything Isabella had left behind.

They searched for hours.

Nothing.

---

Then Elena quietly picked up an old wedding photograph.

She stared at it for several seconds.

"Wait..."

Everyone looked at her.

"Who is this woman?"

Marco smiled faintly.

"Our family priest."

"No."

Elena pointed behind the priest.

"This woman."

Standing almost hidden in the background...

Was an elderly nun.

Alexander leaned closer.

Her face looked strangely familiar.

Evelyn suddenly gasped.

"I know her."

Everyone turned.

"That's Sister Agnes."

"She ran the orphanage where Sofia stayed before her adoption."

Sofia's eyes widened.

"I remember her."

Evelyn slowly nodded.

"She disappeared shortly after you were adopted."

Alexander felt a chill.

"What if..."

He looked around the room.

"What if Isabella trusted her?"

Marco's expression changed instantly.

"No."

He hurried toward an old bookshelf.

From behind several dusty albums...

He removed a faded Christmas card.

Inside...

A handwritten message.

"The chapel is always safe."

"God keeps secrets better than men."

Signed simply:

— Agnes

---

Alexander looked up slowly.

"The Charter..."

"...isn't hidden in a bank."

"Or a vault."

"It's hidden inside a church."

Miles away...

Inside a luxury villa overlooking the Mediterranean...

An elderly woman watched the evening news.

The headline read:

LAST COUNCIL MEMBERS SENTENCED.

She quietly turned off the television.

Then opened an old leather notebook.

On the final page...

One sentence was written in black ink.

Retrieve the Charter before they do.

She smiled faintly.

"So..."

"They've finally found Isabella's trail."

She reached for a satellite phone.

"This is Helena."

"Begin Operation Legacy."

"We're going back to America."

Across the ocean...

Alexander had no idea.

The Council had fallen.

May you like

But one final secret...

Had just awakened its last surviving loyalists.
