CHAPTER 34 — The First Shot

CHAPTER 34 — The First Shot

The lights went out.

Complete darkness swallowed Keller's archive.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Somewhere in the tunnel...

Water dripped steadily onto concrete.

Then—

A flashlight clicked on.

Not Collins'.

Not Marco's.

A single white beam cut through the darkness from the entrance.

The voice returned.

Calm.

Measured.

Almost polite.

"Dr. Keller."

"You've been difficult to find."

Detective Sarah Collins raised her pistol.

"Identify yourself."

The voice ignored her.

"We're not here for the manuscript."

A pause.

"We're here for the man who wrote it."

Adrian Keller didn't seem surprised.

He slowly removed his glasses.

Folded them carefully.

And placed them on the desk.

"I wondered how long it would take."

Lucia stepped in front of him instinctively.

"No."

Keller gently touched her shoulder.

"They didn't come for revenge."

He looked toward the darkness.

"They came for confirmation."

Outside the archive...

Helena remained perfectly still.

Her dying associate lay at her feet.

The single gunshot still echoed in her mind.

She had come alone.

She had told no one.

Yet someone had known exactly where to find her.

For the first time in years...

Helena felt something unfamiliar.

She had lost control of the board.

Sofia tightened her grip on the manuscript.

"Who are they?" she whispered.

Keller answered without taking his eyes off the darkness.

"The people I hoped never existed."

The flashlight lowered slightly.

A tall silhouette stepped into the red emergency lighting.

Black suit.

No insignia.

No weapon visible.

Only a small silver ring on his right hand.

He looked at Keller with quiet respect.

"You've aged well."

Keller smiled faintly.

"So have you."

Marco frowned.

"You know him?"

Keller nodded.

"I know what he represents."

The stranger clasped his hands behind his back.

"My name isn't important."

"It never has been."

Collins didn't lower her weapon.

"Then give us something important."

The man smiled.

"I can."

He looked directly at Keller.

"The vote failed."

Keller closed his eyes.

For a brief moment...

He looked devastated.

"I was afraid of that."

Sofia stepped closer.

"What vote?"

Keller didn't answer.

The stranger did.

"The vote on whether humanity should be trusted with its own future."

Silence crashed over the room.

Marco laughed nervously.

"That's insane."

The stranger shrugged.

"So is history."

Helena slowly walked into the archive.

Every eye turned toward her.

She ignored everyone except the stranger.

"I've never seen you before."

"No."

he replied.

"You were never meant to."

She looked at Keller.

"You knew there was another organization."

Keller nodded once.

"I suspected."

"You never told us."

"I had no proof."

The stranger smiled.

"He had more than proof."

"He had conscience."

Lucia stared at him.

"What do you want?"

The answer came immediately.

"Nothing."

A pause.

"We're here to make sure no one changes what has already been decided."

Sofia instinctively looked down at the manuscript.

The stranger noticed.

"Ah."

"So he gave it to you."

Without warning...

A second gunshot echoed through the archive.

Everyone flinched.

But no one fell.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Concrete dust rained down.

Not a kill shot.

A warning.

The stranger sighed.

"I told them not to do that."

He glanced toward the tunnel behind him.

"They're impatient."

Keller's expression hardened.

"So you've stopped leading."

The man met his gaze.

"No."

A pause.

"I've started losing."

For the first time...

Sofia realized the stranger wasn't entirely in control.

Someone else was giving orders.

Someone they hadn't seen.

Someone even he answered to.

Then a new voice echoed from deeper in the darkness.

Older.

Colder.

Female.

"Enough conversation."

"Bring me the manuscript."

Helena's eyes widened.

"I know that voice..."

She whispered the name before she could stop herself.

"No..."

"It can't be."

Keller slowly looked toward the tunnel.

The color drained from his face.

After thirty-two years of hiding...

There was only one voice he had prayed never to hear again.

"Margaret..."

he whispered.

The woman everyone believed had died before the Council was ever founded...

May you like

answered from the darkness.

"I've waited long enough, Adrian."
