CHAPTER 15 — The Chapel Beneath the Hill

# CHAPTER 15 — The Chapel Beneath the Hill
No one slept that night.
Not Alexander.
Not Sofia.
Not Marco.
Not Evelyn.
The name Sister Agnes echoed through every conversation.
If Isabella had trusted anyone outside her own family...
It would have been the woman who had hidden frightened children during the Council's darkest years.
And if Isabella had hidden the Founder's Charter...
She would have left it with someone who believed truth was sacred.
---
Early the next morning...
The four of them drove toward St. Gabriel's Chapel.
It sat alone on a hill nearly two hours outside Chicago.
The church was small.
Weathered by time.

Its stone walls were cracked.
Its wooden doors faded from decades of harsh winters.
Nothing about it suggested that one of the greatest secrets in American financial history might be hidden inside.
---
Father Thomas greeted them quietly.
He was well into his seventies.
Kind eyes.
Gentle voice.
When Marco mentioned Sister Agnes...
The priest became very still.
"You knew her?"
Father Thomas nodded slowly.
"For almost forty years."
Alexander asked,
"Did she ever leave something here?"
The old priest looked toward the stained-glass windows.
Instead of answering...
He asked a question.
"Are you Sofia Marino?"
Sofia blinked.
"Yes."
The priest smiled sadly.
"I've been waiting a very long time to meet you."
---
He disappeared into the back office.
Several minutes later...
He returned carrying a small iron key.
Old.
Blackened with age.
He placed it into Sofia's hand.
"Sister Agnes told me..."
"If a young woman with your mother's eyes ever walked through these doors..."
"...I was to give her this."
Sofia stared at the key.
"What does it open?"
Father Thomas smiled.
"I've never known."
---
Beneath the chapel...
There was an old stone crypt.
No longer used.
Dust covered every corner.
The air smelled of age and candle wax.
Father Thomas led them to the far wall.
"There."
Built into the stone floor...
Was a tiny brass keyhole.
Exactly the size of the key.
Sofia knelt.
Her hands trembled.
Alexander gently rested a hand on her shoulder.
"You don't have to rush."
She nodded.
Then slowly inserted the key.
A loud metallic click echoed through the crypt.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then...
Part of the stone floor slowly shifted.
Revealing a hidden compartment.
---
Inside...
Lay a weathered oak box wrapped in oilcloth.
On top rested a handwritten note.
For Sofia.
She unfolded it carefully.

The handwriting was unmistakable.
It belonged to Isabella.
"If you found this..."
"Then you survived."
"And if you survived..."
"Then goodness survived with you."
Tears rolled down Sofia's face.
---
Alexander carefully opened the box.
Inside...
Was an old leather-bound book sealed with dark red wax.
Across the cover...
Gold letters had nearly faded away.
THE FOUNDER'S CHARTER
Marco whispered,
"My God..."
---
Beneath it...
There was something unexpected.
A second envelope.
Marked:
Open only after the Council falls.
Alexander looked toward Evelyn.
"They've fallen."
She nodded.
"Open it."
---
Inside...
There was no legal document.
Only a list.
Twenty-seven names.
Some had already been arrested.
Others were dead.
But six names remained.
None of them belonged to Carmen.
None had ever appeared during the investigation.
Evelyn slowly sat down.
"I knew it..."
Alexander frowned.
"What?"
"The Council never had seven members."
She looked at the list.

"It had thirteen."
Silence swallowed the room.
Marco whispered,
"The other six..."
"...escaped."
---
At that exact moment...
Across the Atlantic...
Helena sat inside a private jet bound for New York.
An assistant handed her a tablet.
"They found the Charter."
Helena smiled calmly.
"I expected they would."
"Should we stop them?"
She shook her head.
"No."
She looked out the window.
"Let them believe they've won."
She closed the tablet.
"The Charter isn't the real prize."
The assistant frowned.
"Then what is?"
Helena's smile grew colder.
"The person Isabella trusted enough to hide it."
She looked directly ahead.
"And if Sister Agnes told anyone else the truth..."
"We're about to find them."
---
Back inside the crypt...
Alexander closed the Charter carefully.
He looked around at everyone.
"This isn't over."
Marco nodded.
"No."
"It never was."
Sofia held her mother's final letter tightly against her chest.
For years...
She had believed she was searching for answers.
Now she understood something far more dangerous.
Every answer her mother left behind...
Created an even bigger question.
And somewhere beyond the chapel walls...
The last surviving members of the Council were already moving.
This time...
May you like
Not to protect an empire.
But to reclaim the one secret that could destroy them forever.
